Researcher

Bernadette Bouchon-Meunier

Bernadette Bouchon-Meunier is a researcher known for fuzzy logic, a line of work that began in 1973 with the analysis of natural-language answers to sociology surveys. She presided over the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society in 2020 and 2021, a society that describes computational intelligence as basically another name for artificial intelligence. She helped found the IPMU conference in 1986 and edited the International Journal of Uncertainty, Fuzziness and Knowledge-Based Systems from 1993 to 2025. The society selected her for the 2024 IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award. As of October 2026, she is a director of research, emeritus, at CNRS and an advisor to that journal.

Timeline

  1. 1973

    Fuzzy logic from survey answers

Her work in fuzzy logic begins in 1973, with the analysis of natural-language responses to survey questionnaires in sociology.

  2. 1986

    Co-founding the IPMU conference

She helps found the IPMU conference, which begins in 1986.

  3. 1993–2025

    Editing the uncertainty journal

She becomes editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Uncertainty, Fuzziness and Knowledge-Based Systems in 1993 and holds the post until 2025.

  4. 2011

    Named an IEEE Fellow

She is named an IEEE Fellow in 2011, for contributions to theoretical foundations for reasoning and applications to practical devices.

  5. 2018

    A Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award

The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society gives her its Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award in 2018.

  6. 2020–2021

    President of the IEEE CIS

She presides over the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society in 2020 and 2021. The society describes its field, computational intelligence, as basically another name for artificial intelligence.

  7. 2024

    The Frank Rosenblatt Award

The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society selects her for the 2024 IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Technical Field Award.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus research director at CNRS

She is a director of research, emeritus, at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). Her editorship of the journal ends in 2025, and she is now its advisor.
