Arun Ayyar

Also known as Arun B. Ayyar

Arun Ayyar is a researcher whose work links wireless communications, machine learning, and applied AI for finance. He coauthored a 2009 paper on robust decoding in non-Gaussian noise, co-invented an interference-cancelling wireless scheme, and wrote matrix-factorization and constrained-optimization papers with Nirav Bhatt. In October 2024, he joined IIT Madras's AlphaGrep Quantitative Research Lab as adjunct faculty. At an AI Tech Centre launch in April 2026, he discussed AI applications across sectors, and in July 2026 he led an NLP workshop for finance research. As of October 2026, he is Director of Santa Fe Research Private Limited and holds a PhD from IIT Madras.

  1. 2009

    Robust initial LLRs

    In 2009, he coauthors a paper with Michael Lentmaier, K. Giridhar and Gerhard Fettweis on robust initial LLRs for LDPC decoding in non-Gaussian noise. The team uses density evolution to compare decoder thresholds.

  2. 2011–2013

    Interference Cancelling Block Modulation

    The 2011 application for Interference Cancelling Block Modulation lists him as an inventor, and the U.S. patent publication appears in 2013. Its open-loop precoding scheme assigns each transmitter a predetermined precoder to facilitate interference cancellation at receivers.

  3. 2015

    Monotonous matrix factorization

    With Nirav Bhatt, he proposes monotonous nonnegative matrix factorization in 2015. Their alternating least-squares algorithm recovers monotonous signals from data.

  4. 2018

    Constrained integer least-squares

    He and Nirav Bhatt propose an integer least-squares algorithm in 2018 for low-rank matrix factorization problems with equality, sparsity, and rank constraints. It combines Fincke–Pohst enumeration with sparse solutions of Diophantine equations.

  5. October 2024

    AlphaGrep Quantitative Research Lab

    In October 2024, IIT Madras launches the AlphaGrep Quantitative Research Lab and names him adjunct faculty in its Department of Data Science and AI. The lab lists him among its faculty and explores AI for quantitative finance.

  6. April 2026

    AI Tech Centre launch

    At the April 2026 launch of Net Access India's AI Tech Centre at IIT Madras Research Park, he discusses how AI can generate, analyse, predict, and automate work across sectors.

    NLP for finance research

    During ICFMCF 2026 in July 2026, he leads a workshop on natural language processing for finance research at IIT Madras.
