Researcher

Andreas A. Malikopoulos

Andreas A. Malikopoulos is a control researcher whose work connects learning and control with cyber-physical systems and autonomous vehicles; he earned mechanical-engineering degrees in Greece and Michigan. He held technical roles in the Hellenic Navy, industry, General Motors, and Oak Ridge before joining Delaware, where he led the Sociotechnical Systems Center and built a testbed for autonomous-vehicle algorithms. His work includes the 2021 learning-and-control framework and the 2025 vision-language paper VisioPath; IEEE recognized him with Intelligent Transportation Systems awards in 2019 and 2026. As of October 2026, he is a professor at Cornell and directs its Information and Decision Science Lab.

Timeline

  1. 1994–2001

    Engineering and Navy roles

He earns a B.S. in mechanical engineering at the Technological Educational Institute of Patras in 1994 and a Diploma in mechanical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 2000. He works as an analyst at the Hellenic Navy from 1998 to 2000 and as a product engineer in industry from 2000 to 2001.

  2. 2004–2008

    Mechanical engineering at Michigan

At the University of Michigan, he completes an M.S. in mechanical engineering in 2004 and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering in 2008.

  3. 2008–2010

    Research at General Motors

He works as a senior researcher in General Motors Global Research & Development from 2008 to 2010.

  4. 2010–2017

    Fellow at Oak Ridge

At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, he is an Alvin M. Weinberg Fellow in the Energy and Transportation Science Division from 2010 to 2017. From 2014 to 2017, he also serves as deputy director of the Urban Dynamics Institute.

  5. 2017–2023

    Professor at Delaware

He joins the University of Delaware in 2017 as the Terri Connor Kelly and John Kelly Career Development Professor in Mechanical Engineering and becomes founding director of the Sociotechnical Systems Center from 2019 to 2023. He builds the Scaled Smart City, where his group designs and tests algorithms for AI-piloted vehicles; the testbed bridges driving simulations and real-world tests.

  6. 2019

    An IEEE research award

In 2019, he receives the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Young Researcher Award.

  7. 2021

    Learning and control framework

In 2021, he posts the preprint “Separation of Learning and Control for Cyber-Physical Systems.” It proposes a theoretical framework for optimal control of cyber-physical systems at the intersection of control theory and learning.

  8. 2025

    VisioPath for autonomous navigation

In 2025, he coauthors VisioPath, a paper on vision-language enhanced model predictive control for safe autonomous navigation in mixed traffic.

  9. 2026

    An IEEE application award

In 2026, he receives the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Outstanding Application Award for commercially deployed decentralized control technologies that improve the energy efficiency and sustainability of connected and automated vehicles.

  10. As of October 2026

    Professor at Cornell

As of October 2026, he is a professor in Cornell's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and directs the Information and Decision Science Lab. His research joins learning and control to develop data-driven systems that help robots and autonomous vehicles operate in dynamic environments.
