Andreas Blattmann
Andreas Blattmann is a generative AI researcher and Black Forest Labs co-founder whose work helped shape latent diffusion. After school in Waldkirch, he studies mechanical engineering at KIT and moves into computer-vision research. His work spans the original Stable Diffusion release and Stable Video Diffusion; a rectified-flow transformer paper he coauthors receives ICML’s 2024 Best Paper award. Black Forest Labs develops the FLUX family of image-generation models. Since November 2025, he has served on the KI Bundesverband board for technology and innovation.

Timeline
-
2012
School and music
He grows up in Waldkirch near Freiburg and completes his school-leaving exam there in 2012. Music shapes his school years as he plays in bands and considers studying music.
-
2010s
An engineering student
He studies mechanical engineering at KIT and joins a student group researching autonomous vehicles. There he works on image processing for the model cars, then applies for doctoral research in Björn Ommer’s computer-vision group in Heidelberg.
-
2021–2022
Learning in latent space
When Ommer moves his research group to LMU Munich in 2021, Blattmann follows the team. He coauthors High-Resolution Image Synthesis with Latent Diffusion Models, which applies diffusion in pretrained autoencoders’ latent space to reduce computation.
-
2022–2023
From images to video
His earlier research posts include NVIDIA and Stability AI. In 2022, he and other academics help lead the original Stable Diffusion release; in 2023, he coauthors Stable Video Diffusion for text-to-video and image-to-video generation.
-
2024
Scaling rectified flow
He coauthors Scaling Rectified Flow Transformers for High-Resolution Image Synthesis, which receives ICML’s 2024 Best Paper award.
-
2024
Founding Black Forest Labs
He co-founds Black Forest Labs with Robin Rombach, Patrick Esser, and other researchers. The company’s FLUX family supports generative images and image editing.
-
Since November 2025
A role on the AI board
He is a Black Forest Labs co-founder and serves as board member for technology and innovation at the KI Bundesverband, a role that began in November 2025.
