Andre Esteva
Andre Esteva is an AI scientist whose work spans deep learning for skin-cancer diagnosis and cancer treatment. He earned undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering and pure mathematics at UT Austin in 2011 and pursued a Stanford PhD in computer vision; a 2017 paper he co-authored described a model that matched dermatologist accuracy on skin-cancer images. He co-founded contact-center AI company Cresta, held engineering roles at Google Research, Sandia National Labs and GE Healthcare, and led Medical AI at Salesforce Research before co-founding Artera, whose cancer tests use tissue images and clinical data to inform treatment. As of October 2026, he is Artera’s CEO and co-founder; TIME named him to the 2025 TIME100 Health list, and its prostate and breast cancer assays received EU CE marking in April 2026.
Timeline
-
2011
Degrees at UT Austin
He completes undergraduate degrees in electrical engineering and pure mathematics at UT Austin in December 2011, with highest honors.
-
2017
Stanford’s AI Lab
In 2017, he pursues a PhD in electrical engineering at Stanford and studies machine learning in Sebastian Thrun’s group within the Artificial Intelligence Lab of Computer Science.
-
2017
Skin cancer classification
In 2017, he co-authors the Nature paper “Dermatologist-level classification of skin cancer with deep neural networks.” Its model trains on lesion images and reaches accuracy comparable to board-certified dermatologists.
-
2017–2019
Co-founding Cresta
He joins Cresta as a co-founder in October 2017 and serves through January 2019. The company develops generative AI software for contact centers that helps customer support and sales agents.
-
2019–2021
Medical AI at Salesforce
From September 2019 to August 2021, he leads Medical AI at Salesforce Research; his engineering roles also include Google Research, Sandia National Labs, and GE Healthcare. Salesforce Research’s ReceptorNet deep-learning system predicts breast-cancer hormone-receptor status from H&E tissue images.
-
2025
TIME100 Health
In 2025, he joins the TIME100 Health list.
-
April 2026
EU CE marking
In April 2026, he leads Artera as its prostate and breast cancer assays receive EU CE marking under the In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation.
-
Since 2021
CEO of Artera
As of October 2026, he is CEO and co-founder of Artera, a role he starts in September 2021. Its cancer tests combine digitized histopathology images with patient clinical variables to assess cancer aggressiveness and potential treatment benefits.
