Alexey Gorshkov is a physicist whose work connects quantum information, quantum computing and machine learning. His family moved from Moscow to the United States in 1997; he earned a Harvard degree in physics and mathematics in 2004 and completed a physics doctorate there in 2010. His group studied strongly interacting photons, he coauthored a machine-learning framework for many-body quantum systems, and he received the 2019 PECASE and the 2024 IEEE Photonics Society Quantum Electronics Award. As of October 2026, he is a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and an adjunct associate professor at the University of Maryland, where he leads a theoretical research group.

Timeline
-
1997–2004
From Moscow to Harvard
His family moves from Moscow to the United States in 1997, and he graduates from Newton South High School in 2000. He graduates from Harvard College in 2004 with an A.B. in physics and mathematics, and places second in a nationwide math Olympiad in high school.
-
2010
A Harvard physics doctorate
He earns a PhD in physics from Harvard University in 2010 under Mikhail Lukin. His doctoral thesis develops methods to use quantum mechanics for quantum communication, computation and simulation.
-
2013
From Caltech to NIST
He moves from a Lee A. DuBridge postdoctoral scholar position at Caltech to a staff physicist role at NIST in 2013, and starts his own research group at the University of Maryland.
-
2013
Strong photon interactions
His research team engineers strong interactions between photons, a basis for light circuits that perform logical operations and computations. Physics World names the research among its top 10 breakthroughs of 2013.
-
2019
A PECASE award
He receives the 2019 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers for quantum-science research that includes manipulating individual light particles so they interact strongly.
-
2021–2022
Machine learning for quantum systems
In 2021, he coauthors a machine-learning framework that discovers effective hydrodynamic equations from limited data for many-body quantum systems. In 2022, he says his group proposes quantum algorithms, software designed to run on quantum computers.
-
2024
The quantum electronics award
He receives the 2024 IEEE Photonics Society Quantum Electronics Award for contributions to understanding, designing and controlling interacting quantum systems, with applications in quantum computers, sensors and networks.
-
As of October 2026
Entangled states for sensors
In June 2026, he and collaborators describe an entangled state and two ways to create it inside an optical cavity to filter noise affecting both quantum sensors. As of October 2026, he is a physicist at NIST and an adjunct associate professor in the University of Maryland’s Department of Physics and Institute for Advanced Computer Studies; he leads a theoretical research group working across quantum information science, quantum optics, atomic and molecular physics, and condensed matter physics.
