Alexey Lyapunov

Also known as Алексей Андреевич Ляпунов

Alexey Lyapunov was a Soviet mathematician whose work linked cybernetics and the mathematical theory of programming. He studied with Nikolai Luzin, researched descriptive set theory, and joined the Steklov Institute in 1934. He coauthored “The Main Features of Cybernetics” in 1955 and became editor of the first Soviet cybernetics journal in 1958. After moving to Siberia in 1961, he built cybernetics departments at several institutes and universities; the Academy of Sciences elected him in 1964. He died in 1973, and the IEEE Computer Society named him a Computer Pioneer in 1996.

Timeline

  1. 1928–1934

    Studying with Nikolai Luzin

He enrolls at Moscow State University in 1928, becomes Nikolai Luzin's student in 1932, and begins descriptive set theory research. In 1934, he joins the Steklov Institute of Mathematics.

  2. 1954–1958

    Problems of Cybernetics

Lyapunov and Anatoly Kitov give public cybernetics lectures before publication of their paper; 121 seminars take place from 1954 to 1955. In 1958, Lyapunov becomes editor of the first Soviet journal on cybernetics, Problems of Cybernetics.

  3. 1955

    The Main Features of Cybernetics

With Sergei Sobolev and Anatoly Kitov, Lyapunov coauthors “The Main Features of Cybernetics” in 1955. The paper explains cybernetics through information theory, electronic computers and automatic control.

  4. 1961

    The mathematical theory of programming

He lays the foundations of mathematical programming theory and proposes a language that anticipates high-level programming languages. In 1961, he moves to Siberia and creates cybernetics departments at several institutes and universities.

  5. 1964

    An Academy election

The Academy of Sciences elects him a member in 1964.

  6. 1973

    Death in Moscow

He dies in Moscow in 1973 after a heart attack.

  7. 1996

    A Computer Pioneer Award

In 1996, the IEEE Computer Society honors him as a Computer Pioneer for founding Soviet cybernetics and programming.
