Timeline

  1. 1990–1995

    Applied mathematics and a doctorate

He earns a diploma in applied mathematics at the University of Ljubljana in 1990 and a doctorate in engineering sciences at the University of Karlsruhe in 1995.

  2. 2011

    Chairing Humanoids

In 2011, he serves as general chair of the IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots (Humanoids).

  3. 2019

    Coordinating ReconCell

In 2019, he coordinates ReconCell, which develops a robotic workcell that makes production automation more accessible to small and medium-sized manufacturers.

  4. 2023

    Learning robot contact policies

In 2023, he coauthors “Hierarchical learning of robotic contact policies” with Mihael Simonič and Bojan Nemec. The method uses autonomous learning for robot disassembly and supports recycling of electronic devices. His research interests include robot learning, imitation learning, reconfigurable robotic systems, cognitive robotics and humanoid robotics.

  5. As of October 2026

    Leading JSI’s robotics department

As of October 2026, he heads the Department of Automatics, Biocybernetics and Robotics at Jožef Stefan Institute. In September 2026, department colleagues present a dual-arm robot that uses AI, machine vision and force sensing at a European Parliament showcase.
