Ahmet Murat Tekalp

Also known as A. Murat Tekalp, Murat Tekalp, Ahmet M. Tekalp

Ahmet Murat Tekalp is a professor at Koç University whose research spans digital video processing and learned video compression. He earned electrical engineering and mathematics degrees at Boğaziçi University in 1980, then graduate degrees at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1982 and 1984. He worked at Eastman Kodak and the University of Rochester and joined Koç in 2001 while still at Rochester; his Prentice Hall book Digital Video Processing appeared in 1995, and his research group contributed to MPEG-4 and MPEG-7. He authored a 2019 IEEE tutorial on deep learning for image and video processing and coauthored learned video compression research in 2025. He received TÜBİTAK's Science Award in 2004, joined the Turkish Academy of Sciences in 2007 and Academia Europaea in 2010, and serves on an IEEE Signal Processing Society committee through 2027.

    Degrees at Boğaziçi and Rensselaer

At Boğaziçi University, he earns bachelor's degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics in 1980. He completes master's and PhD degrees in electrical, computer and systems engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1982 and 1984.

  2. 1984–2005

    Kodak and Rochester

At Eastman Kodak, he works as a research scientist from 1984 to 1987. At the University of Rochester, he becomes a Distinguished University Professor and serves through 2005.

  3. 1995–2015

Digital Video Processing and MPEG standards

His Prentice Hall book Digital Video Processing appears in 1995, with a new edition in June 2015. His research group contributes technology to the ISO/IEC MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 standards.

  4. 2001–2013

Professor and engineering dean at Koç

In June 2001, he joins Koç University as a professor. He serves as Dean of Engineering there from 2010 to 2013.

  5. 2004–2010

    Awards and academy memberships

He receives the TÜBİTAK Science Award in 2004. He becomes a full member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences in 2007 and is elected to Academia Europaea in 2010.

  6. 2019

    A deep learning tutorial

His 2019 IEEE Signal Processing Society tutorial is titled Deep Learning for Image and Video Processing.

  7. 2025

    Learned video compression

In 2025, he coauthors a paper on content-adaptive inference for learned video compression. The method adjusts motion-vector scale during encoding to fit the training and test videos.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor and IEEE committee member

As of October 2026, he is a professor in Koç University's electrical and electronics engineering department and serves on IEEE SPS's Nominations and Elections Committee through 2027.
