Aditya Parameswaran
Also known as Aditya G. Parameswaran
Aditya Parameswaran is a computer scientist and associate professor at UC Berkeley who develops tools for working with data and language models. He studied at IIT Bombay and Stanford, then held research and teaching posts at MIT and Illinois before joining Berkeley in 2019. In 2021, he co-founded Ponder, which Snowflake acquired in 2023. His 2024 papers introduced EvalGen, which helps people evaluate language-model outputs, and DocETL, which uses AI agents to improve document-processing pipelines. He co-directs Berkeley's EPIC Data Lab and is Snowflake's AI x Data Research Lead.

Timeline
-
2007–2013
IIT Bombay and Stanford
He earns a BTech in computer science and engineering at IIT Bombay in 2007 and a PhD in computer science at Stanford University in 2013.
-
2013–2014
MIT and Illinois posts
From September 2013 to August 2014, he works as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. He joins the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, as an assistant professor in computer science in August 2014.
-
2014
A SIGMOD dissertation award
In 2014, he shares the SIGMOD Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award with Andy Pavlo. His Stanford dissertation, “Human-Powered Data Management,” is supervised by Hector Garcia-Molina.
-
2019
Joining Berkeley
In 2019, he moves from Illinois to UC Berkeley as an assistant professor in the I School and EECS. He receives the 2019 Very Large Data Bases Early Career Research Contributions Award.
-
2021–2023
Co-founding Ponder
In 2021, he co-founds Ponder and serves as its president, bringing his group's research in data-science tools into a company. Snowflake acquires Ponder in October 2023.
-
April 2024
EvalGen for model evaluation
He coauthors “Who Validates the Validators?” in April 2024, introducing the EvalGen interface. It helps people generate evaluation criteria and uses their grades of language-model outputs to select evaluation functions that better match their requirements.
-
October 2024
DocETL for document processing
In October 2024, he coauthors the DocETL paper with Shreya Shankar, Tristan Chambers, Tarak Shah and Eugene Wu. The system lets users define document-processing pipelines and uses AI agents to rewrite and evaluate them.
-
2026
A ten-year paper award
In 2026, he shares the IEEE ICDE 10-Year Influential Paper Award with Manas Joglekar and Hector Garcia-Molina for their 2016 paper “Interactive Data Exploration with Smart Drill-Down.” The paper introduces an operator that summarizes data and helps analysts find unusual patterns.
-
As of October 2026
Berkeley and Snowflake roles
As of October 2026, he is an associate professor in UC Berkeley's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and co-directs the EPIC Data Lab, which builds data tools that use language models and require little or no code. He also serves as Snowflake's AI x Data Research Lead.
