Adish Singla

Adish Singla is a computer scientist whose AI work studies machine teaching and learning systems that adapt through interaction with people. He earned a bachelor's degree at IIT Delhi, a master's at EPFL and a computer-science PhD at ETH Zurich, worked in Bing Search before his PhD, and joined MPI-SWS as tenure-track faculty in 2017. He received Microsoft's Gold Star Award in 2010 and Tech Transfer Award in 2011, followed by a Facebook Graduate Fellowship in 2015. His research spans learning agents and reinforcement learning for education; in 2021 he received an ERC Starting Grant for TOPS, his project on machine-assisted teaching in open-ended problem solving. His group released Python and prompt-programming platforms in 2025; he is a tenured faculty member at MPI-SWS and co-organized a 2026 ICML workshop on Human-AI Co-Creativity.

Timeline

  1. 2010–2015

    Microsoft and Facebook awards

He receives the Microsoft Gold Star Award in 2010 and the Microsoft Tech Transfer Award in 2011, then a Facebook Graduate Fellowship in 2015.

  2. By 2017

    Education and Bing Search

Before starting his computer-science PhD at ETH Zurich, he works for over three years as a Senior Development Lead in Bing Search. By 2017, he holds a bachelor's degree from IIT Delhi and a master's degree from EPFL and completes the PhD.

  3. 2017

    Joining MPI-SWS

In October 2017, he joins MPI-SWS as a tenure-track faculty member. His research focuses on machine-learning frameworks and algorithms for systems where people are integral.

  4. 2018

    Learning to interact with agents

In 2018, he coauthors “Learning to Interact with Learning Agents” with Hamed Hassani and Andreas Krause. The work studies online and active learning when queried experts are themselves learning agents, and shows how standard algorithms can fail as those experts adapt.

  5. 2021

An education survey and ERC grant

In 2021, he coauthors a survey of reinforcement learning for education that grows out of the RL4ED workshop at Educational Data Mining. The article surveys research directions and challenges for applying reinforcement learning to education. He also receives a 2021 ERC Starting Grant for TOPS, a project on machine-assisted teaching for open-ended problem solving.

  6. 2023

    Generative AI at NeurIPS

In 2023, his group co-organizes the Generative AI for Education (GAIED) workshop at NeurIPS.

  7. March 2025–April 2025

    Python and prompt platforms

In March 2025, his group releases a Python programming platform for K–12 levels. In April 2025, it releases a prompt programming platform.

  8. As of October 2026

    Tenured faculty at MPI-SWS

As of October 2026, he is a tenured faculty member at MPI-SWS. In 2026, his group co-organizes the Human-AI Co-Creativity workshop at ICML.
