J. I. Cirac
Also known as Ignacio Cirac, Juan Ignacio Cirac, J. Ignacio Cirac, J. Cirac
Ignacio Cirac is a theoretical physicist whose work connects quantum information with neural-network states and machine learning. He studied theoretical physics at Complutense University of Madrid, held academic posts in Spain, Colorado, and Innsbruck, and joined the Max Planck Society in 2001. His 1995 paper with Peter Zoller presented a trapped-ion route to quantum computation. Later, he and his collaborators connected neural-network quantum states with tensor networks and applied generalized networks to supervised image and sound classification. He received the 2006 Prince of Asturias Award, shared the 2013 Wolf Prize in Physics with Zoller, and received a 2026 honorary doctorate; as of October 2026, he directs the Theory Division at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and is an honorary professor at the Technical University of Munich.

Timeline
-
1988–2001
Education and academic posts
He graduates in theoretical physics at Complutense University of Madrid in 1988 and earns his PhD there in 1991. He holds an associate professorship at Castilla-La Mancha from 1991 to 1996, spends eighteen months at Colorado working with Peter Zoller, and becomes professor of theoretical physics at Innsbruck in 1996, serving through 2001. He joins the Max Planck Society as director at its quantum-optics institute in 2001.
-
1995
A trapped-ion quantum computer
His 1995 paper with Peter Zoller shows how cold ions in a linear trap can implement a quantum computer, with gates coupled through collective motion.
-
2006
A Prince of Asturias Award
He receives the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical & Scientific Research in 2006.
-
2013
The Wolf Prize in Physics
He shares the Wolf Prize in Physics with Peter Zoller in 2013.
-
2017–2018
Neural networks meet tensor networks
In 2017, he and four coauthors show that neural-network quantum states and string-bond states can represent a fractional quantum Hall state exactly. In 2018, he, Ivan Glasser, and Nicola Pancotti develop generalized tensor networks for supervised learning and benchmark image and sound classification.
-
2026
An honorary doctorate
Universidad Carlos III de Madrid awards him an honorary doctorate in 2026 for contributions to quantum information theory.
-
As of October 2026
Director of the Theory Division
As of October 2026, he directs the Theory Division at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics and holds an honorary professorship at the Technical University of Munich.
