Researcher

Adam Marblestone

Adam Marblestone is a researcher whose work links brain recording, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. He earned a physics BS at Yale and a biophysics PhD at Harvard, then coauthored research on scalable neural recording and neuroscience-informed machine learning. His career spans brain-circuit mapping at MIT, neuroscience research at Google DeepMind, and neural-interface strategy at Kernel; MIT Technology Review named him an Innovator Under 35 in 2018. He co-founded Convergent Research in 2021, and as of October 2026 he is its CEO, working with collaborators on roadmaps for future Focused Research Organizations.

Timeline

  1. 2008–2010

    Goldwater and Hertz honors

He wins a Goldwater Scholarship in 2008 and receives a Hertz Foundation Fellowship in 2010.

  2. 2009–2014

    Yale and Harvard degrees

He completes a BS in physics at Yale in 2009 and earns a biophysics PhD at Harvard in 2014 under George Church.

  3. 2013

    Physical principles for neural recording

In 2013, he coauthors “Physical Principles for Scalable Neural Recording,” which examines physical constraints on measuring activity across a mammalian brain and outlines optical, electrical, magnetic resonance, and molecular recording methods.

  4. 2016

    Deep learning and neuroscience

In 2016, he coauthors “Towards an integration of deep learning and neuroscience,” proposing that diverse brain cost functions and pre-structured architectures matched to behavior can make learning more data-efficient.

  5. 2018

    Kernel and an Innovator award

In 2018, he serves as chief strategy officer at Kernel, coordinating researchers to identify neural-interface approaches that could help understand and treat neurological diseases. He receives MIT Technology Review's 35 Innovators Under 35 Award in 2018.

  6. By 2019

    Brain-circuit mapping at MIT

Before his 2019 Google DeepMind role, he works in Ed Boyden's Synthetic Neurobiology Group at MIT on technologies for brain-circuit mapping.

  7. 2019

    Google DeepMind research

In 2019, he is a research scientist at Google DeepMind studying links between neuroscience and artificial intelligence.

  8. As of October 2026

    CEO at Convergent Research

In 2021, he co-founds the nonprofit Convergent Research to help launch Focused Research Organizations. By August 2025, Convergent has FRO proposals in climate, materials science, chemistry, and biology, and has launched an FRO for software in mathematics. As of October 2026, he is CEO and works with collaborators on roadmaps for future FROs.
