Researcher

Aarti Singh

Aarti Singh is a machine-learning researcher whose work develops interactive algorithms for learning and decision making. She earned engineering degrees in Delhi and Wisconsin, completed a Princeton postdoctoral appointment, and joined Carnegie Mellon in 2009. Her work includes PeerReview4All for fair conference reviewer assignment and Projection Optimization, a 2025 framework for multi-objective reinforcement learning from human feedback. As of October 2026, she is a professor in CMU's Machine Learning Department and director of its NSF AI Institute for Societal Decision Making.

She earns a B.E. in electronics and communication engineering from the University of Delhi in 2001, an M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2003, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering there in 2008.

  2. 2008–2009

    Princeton postdoc and CMU faculty

She works as a postdoctoral research associate in Princeton's Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics from 2008 to 2009, then joins Carnegie Mellon's faculty in 2009.

  3. 2014

    The Habermann chair

In 2014, she receives the A. Nico Habermann Chair of Computer Science, a three-year endowed CMU chair for faculty in the early stages of their careers.

  4. 2021

    PeerReview4All for fair review

In 2021, she coauthors PeerReview4All, an automated method for conference reviewer assignment that uses incremental max-flow to maximize review quality for the most disadvantaged paper.

  5. May 2023

    Directing AI-SDM

In May 2023, Carnegie Mellon names her director of the NSF AI Institute for Societal Decision Making, which develops human-centric AI tools for decisions in disaster management and public health.

  6. 2025

    Projection Optimization for RLHF

With Nuoya Xiong, she publishes Projection Optimization at ICML 2025, a multi-objective RLHF framework that handles groups with different weights for their objectives.

  7. 2025

    General chair of ICML

She serves as General Chair of the International Conference on Machine Learning in 2025.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor and institute director

She is the FORE Systems Professor in CMU's Machine Learning Department and director of the NSF AI Institute for Societal Decision Making. Her research develops principled interactive algorithms for learning and decision making in scientific and societal domains.
