Researcher

A. Lawrence Spitz

A. Lawrence Spitz developed methods for recognizing script and language in scanned documents, and his work also addressed document redaction and handwriting recognition. He co-authored a 1994 paper on language determination from scanned document images, patented a 1995 method for automatic character-script identification, and published on script and language recognition in 1997. The IAPR named him a Fellow in 2004 for his contributions to document recognition and service; in 2005, he co-authored a paper on information leakage through document redaction. In 2006, he served on the DIAL'06 program committee and was affiliated with DocRec Techs. in New Zealand; in 2008, he co-authored work on character-shape codes for offline handwritten word recognition.
