Researcher

Tyler Romero

Tyler Romero is a machine-learning researcher whose work spans language-model training, computer vision, preference tuning, and recommender systems. At Texas A&M, he received the Craig C. Brown Outstanding Senior Engineer Award in 2015 and graduated in 2016 with a computer engineering degree. He published a direct preference optimization explainer in 2024 and an extension to BADGE active learning in January 2025, wrote a Groundlight guide in May 2025, and coauthored Olmo 3 in December 2025. Olmo Hybrid outperformed Olmo 3 across standard pretraining and mid-training evaluations in April 2026; as of October 2026, he is a Member of Technical Staff on the MAI Superintelligence Team and works on post-training.

Timeline

  1. 2015

    Outstanding Senior Engineer Award

At Texas A&M, he receives the Craig C. Brown Outstanding Senior Engineer Award in 2015.

  2. 2016

    Computer engineering degree

He graduates from Texas A&M in 2016 with a degree in computer engineering.

  3. April 2024

    Explaining direct preference optimization

In April 2024, he publishes a guide to Direct Preference Optimization, describing it as a preference-tuning method that avoids reinforcement learning.

  4. January 2025

    Extending BADGE active learning

In January 2025, he publishes an extension to BADGE that supports variable-sized batches through a prioritized order of unlabeled data points.

  5. May 2025

    A Groundlight computer-vision guide

In May 2025, he writes a guide to building computer-vision applications with Groundlight's MCP server as Lead ML Engineer.

  6. December 2025

    Olmo 3 and open training

In December 2025, he coauthors Olmo 3, a fully open family of 7B and 32B language models whose model flow includes every training stage, checkpoint, data point, and dependency. At Ai2, he works as a Research Engineer on pretraining open language models; earlier, he builds large-scale recommender systems at Twitter and studies CS and ML at Stanford.

  7. April 2026

    Olmo Hybrid

In April 2026, he coauthors Olmo Hybrid, a 7B model that replaces Olmo 3's sliding-window layers with Gated DeltaNet layers. The model outperforms Olmo 3 across standard pretraining and mid-training evaluations.

  8. As of October 2026

    Member of Technical Staff

As of October 2026, he is a Member of Technical Staff on the MAI Superintelligence Team, where he works on post-training.
