Researcher

Tingting Zhu

Tingting Zhu is an Oxford researcher who applies machine learning to healthcare. She earned a BEng with honours in electrical engineering at the University of Malta and an MSc in biomedical engineering at University College London before completing an Oxford DPhil in information and biomedical engineering in 2016. Her work has included wearable-sensor monitoring and detection of autonomic nervous system dysfunction, Bayesian fusion of physiological signals, kidney-transplant decision support, and causal graph neural networks. As of October 2026, she is an Associate Professor in AI for Digital Health at Oxford.

Timeline

  1. 2016

    An Oxford DPhil

She earns a BEng with honours in Electrical Engineering at the University of Malta and an MSc in Biomedical Engineering at University College London before completing a DPhil in information and biomedical engineering at Oxford in 2016. Her doctoral work develops probabilistic methods for combining wearable-sensor data to monitor medical time series.

  2. By 2019

    Oxford faculty appointments

After her DPhil, she holds a Stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship at St Hilda's College, Oxford. In 2018, she becomes the first Associate Member of Faculty in Oxford Engineering Science; in 2019, she joins its full faculty after receiving a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship for clinical AI work on multimorbidity in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries. She also receives the IET J.A. Lodge award in 2019.

  3. 2019

    Autonomic dysfunction detection

In 2019, she coauthors a proof-of-principle machine-learning tool that classifies autonomic nervous system dysfunction levels from ECG and PPG waveforms in datasets of patients in Vietnam with hand, foot and mouth disease and tetanus. These waveforms can be collected with low-cost wearable sensors.

  4. 2021

    Bayesian fusion of signals

In 2021, she coauthors a study comparing parametric and non-parametric Bayesian models for fusing respiratory-rate estimates from photoplethysmogram signals.

  5. January 2026

    Kidney transplant decision support

By January 2026, she is Co-Investigator and Lead for Work Package 1, Model Development, in a five-year NIHR programme on AI decision support for kidney transplantation.

  6. August 2026

    Causal graphs for healthcare

In August 2026, she coauthors a Nature Biomedical Engineering perspective on causal graph neural networks for healthcare. The paper reviews causal inference methods and graph approaches for intervention prediction and counterfactual reasoning.

  7. August 2026

    Supervising healthcare LLM research

In August 2026, she supervises an Oxford UNIQplus internship project on reasoning enhancement in large language models for healthcare applications.

  8. As of October 2026

    Associate Professor at Oxford

As of October 2026, she is an Associate Professor in AI for Digital Health in the University of Oxford's Department of Engineering Science and a Non-Tutorial Fellow at Kellogg College.
