Researcher

Quentin Boehler

Quentin Boehler is a robotics researcher who applies machine learning and magnetic actuation to medical and surgical systems. Born in Strasbourg in 1990, he studies mechatronics and robotics, completes a robotics PhD at the University of Strasbourg in 2016, and joins ETH Zurich's Multi-Scale Robotics Lab in 2017. His work includes machine-learning models for electromagnetic navigation, magnetic microcargo transport, and self-folding soft-robotic chains. Appointed in 2025, he is a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Robotics at ETH Zurich and leads its Medical Robotics Lab, where he develops minimally invasive clinical systems.

Timeline

  1. 1990–2013

    Mechatronics at INSA Strasbourg

Born in Strasbourg in 1990, he receives an engineering degree in mechatronics from INSA Strasbourg in 2013; his INSA qualification is also described as an M.S. in mechatronics.

  2. 2013–2016

    A robotics MSc and PhD

He earns an M.Sc. in robotics from the University of Strasbourg in 2013 and a robotics PhD there in 2016. His thesis focuses on tensegrity mechanisms and variable-stiffness devices for MR-compatible robotic systems.

  3. 2016

    A Strasbourg thesis prize

His thesis wins the University of Strasbourg research commission's best thesis award and the first prize at GDR Robotique's 2016 PhD thesis awards.

  4. 2017–2025

    At ETH's Multi-Scale Robotics Lab

From 2017 to 2025, he works at ETH Zurich's Multi-Scale Robotics Lab, first as a postdoctoral associate and later as a senior researcher, on magnetically guided devices and electromagnetic navigation technologies for medical applications.

  5. 2019

    Modeling electromagnetic navigation

In a 2019 preprint, he coauthors a study that uses random forests and artificial neural networks to model nonlinear magnetic fields in an electromagnetic navigation system; both models outperform a linear baseline.

  6. 2022

    Artificial microtubules for microcargoes

In 2022, he coauthors an artificial microtubule study that embeds micromagnets as stepping stones to guide particles through flow networks.

  7. 2023

    Self-folding soft-robotic chains

In 2023, he coauthors magnetic soft-robotic chains called MaSoChains that self-fold into stable assemblies with programmable shapes and functions for minimally invasive interventions.

  8. 2025

    Assistant Professor of Robotics

In 2025, he is appointed Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Robotics in ETH Zurich's Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT).

  9. March 2026

    Starting the Medical Robotics Lab

In March 2026, he plans to establish the Medical Robotics Lab at ETH Zurich's Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems, focusing on minimally invasive robotic systems for clinical applications.

  10. As of October 2026

    Assistant Professor and lab lead

He is an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) of Robotics at ETH Zurich's Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems, where he leads the Medical Robotics Lab. His current research addresses clinical needs through robotic design, control, and simulation for therapeutic and diagnostic interventions.
