Qixing Huang
Also known as Qi-Xing Huang
Qixing Huang is a computer scientist at the University of Texas at Austin whose research on 3D shapes sits at the intersection of graphics, vision and machine learning. He earned a Stanford PhD in 2012 under Leonidas Guibas, won the Symposium on Geometry Processing best paper award in 2013, and coauthored ShapeNet, the 3D model repository that received the symposium's dataset award in 2018. An IJCAI Early Career Spotlight followed in 2019, an NSF CAREER award in 2021, and tenure at Austin by 2023. In 2025 he coauthored RayZer, a self-supervised model that recovers camera parameters from unposed images and synthesizes novel views. He is an associate professor of computer science at UT Austin, where his recent focus is 3D generative models.
Timeline
-
2008–2012
A Stanford PhD with Guibas
He holds the Mr. and Mrs. Chin-Nan Chen Stanford Graduate Fellowship from 2008 to 2011. In 2012, he receives his PhD from Stanford University, working with Professor Leonidas Guibas.
-
2013
Best paper on shape maps
In 2013, he and Leonidas Guibas win the best paper award at the Symposium on Geometry Processing for Consistent Shape Maps via Semidefinite Programming.
-
2015–2018
ShapeNet and a dataset award
In 2015, he is among the authors of ShapeNet, a large repository of richly annotated 3D CAD models of objects organized under the WordNet taxonomy. ShapeNet receives the best dataset award at the Symposium on Geometry Processing in 2018.
-
2019–2020
IJCAI spotlight and SGP co-chair
In 2019, he receives an IJCAI Early Career Spotlight, and in 2020 he co-chairs the Symposium on Geometry Processing. His research sits at the intersection of graphics, geometry, optimization, vision and machine learning.
-
2021
An NSF CAREER award
A former research assistant professor at the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago, he is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at UT Austin when he receives an NSF CAREER award in 2021. The award funds work on characterizing the uncertainties of 3D sensors used to reconstruct, analyze and model 3D geometries, with studies in digital dental care, autonomous driving and digital archaeology.
-
By 2023
Tenure at UT Austin
By 2023, he is an associate professor with tenure in the computer science department at the University of Texas at Austin, with more than 100 papers at leading venues.
-
2025
RayZer view synthesis
In 2025, he coauthors RayZer with Hanwen Jiang, Georgios Pavlakos and colleagues, a self-supervised multi-view 3D vision model trained without any 3D supervision. RayZer takes unposed and uncalibrated images, recovers camera parameters, reconstructs a scene representation and synthesizes novel views.
-
As of October 2026
Associate professor at UT Austin
He is an associate professor of computer science at the University of Texas at Austin. His recent focus is developing 3D generative models that enforce geometric, physical and topological priors and learn from both 3D and 2D data, to address limited 3D data and generalization.
