Oded Regev

Also known as עודד רגב

Oded Regev is a theoretical computer scientist at New York University's Courant Institute whose Learning With Errors problem forms the basis of post-quantum cryptography and whose lab uses interpretable machine learning to study biology. He earned his Ph.D. at Tel Aviv University in 2001 and introduced Learning With Errors in 2005, work that won the 2018 Gödel Prize. In 2023, he posted a quantum factoring algorithm whose quantum part takes fewer steps than Shor's algorithm, and he was senior author of a paper on an interpretable neural network for RNA splicing. Honours include the 2024 RSA Conference Award for Excellence in Mathematics, shared with Craig Gentry, and a place among the ACM Fellows of 2025. At Courant, he is a Silver Professor.

Timeline

  1. 1995–2001

    Degrees at Tel Aviv University

He earns a B.Sc. in mathematics and computer science at Tel Aviv University in 1995, an M.Sc. in 1997, and a Ph.D. in computer science in 2001. His doctoral advisor is Yossi Azar, and his thesis covers scheduling and load balancing.

  2. 2005

    The Learning With Errors problem

He starts on lattice-based cryptography as a postdoc, first looking for attacks that a quantum computer could exploit. In 2005, he introduces the Learning With Errors (LWE) problem in a paper that proves its average-case hardness from the worst-case quantum hardness of well-studied lattice problems and gives a public-key encryption scheme simpler and more efficient than earlier ones. LWE forms the basis of post-quantum cryptography.

  3. 2018–2019

    Gödel Prize and Simons Investigator

He wins the 2018 Gödel Prize for the Learning With Errors paper. The citation calls LWE a versatile foundation for nearly every kind of cryptographic object imaginable. In 2019, he receives the Simons Investigator award.

  4. 2022

    Speaker at the 2022 ICM

In 2022, he speaks at the International Congress of Mathematicians.

  5. August 2023

    A faster quantum factoring algorithm

In August 2023, he posts the preprint "An Efficient Quantum Factoring Algorithm," which shows that n-bit integers can be factored by running a quantum circuit with about n^1.5 gates several times, followed by classical post-processing. The quantum part takes a number of steps proportional to n^1.5, down from n^2 in Shor's algorithm of 1994. In its original form, the algorithm needs about n^1.5 qubits, where Shor's algorithm needs about n.

  6. October 2023

    An interpretable RNA splicing model

In October 2023, NYU announces an interpretable neural network for RNA splicing built by Susan Liao, Mukund Sudarshan and Regev, the senior author. The paper, "Deciphering RNA splicing logic with interpretable machine learning," appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2023. The model shows that a small hairpin-like RNA structure decreases splicing, and experiments confirm it.

  7. 2024–2025

    RSA award and ACM Fellowship

He and Craig Gentry share the 2024 RSA Conference Award for Excellence in Mathematics for lattice-based encryption, especially the widely used Learning With Errors cryptosystem. ACM names him a Fellow in its 2025 class, announced in January 2026, for contributions to computational complexity, lattice-based cryptography, and quantum computing.

  8. As of October 2026

    Silver Professor at Courant

He is a Silver Professor in NYU's Courant Institute, and his lab uses interpretable machine learning techniques to study biological processes. His earlier posts include a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study and affiliations with Tel Aviv University and, under CNRS, the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.
