Noah Brenowitz
Noah Brenowitz is an atmospheric scientist who builds machine-learning models of weather and climate. He earned a PhD at NYU's Courant Institute in 2017, then worked with Christopher Bretherton on machine-learning climate models, first at the University of Washington and later at Vulcan and the Allen Institute for AI. In 2023, he collaborated on the ACE climate emulator from AI2 and coauthored ClimSim, a dataset that received an Outstanding Paper Award at NeurIPS 2023. In 2025, he was first author of Climate in a Bottle, a generative model that emulates the global atmosphere at 5 km resolution. He is a Senior Research Scientist at NVIDIA.
Timeline
-
2011–2017
A Courant Institute PhD
He earns a BS in mathematics and statistics at New York University in 2011. He completes a PhD in atmosphere-ocean science and mathematics at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in 2017, with Andrew Majda as his advisor.
-
2018–2019
Neural networks for subgrid physics
He works with Christopher Bretherton on machine-learning climate models, first as a Moore/Sloan & WRF Innovation in Data Science Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Washington. Their 2018 paper in Geophysical Research Letters trains a neural-network parameterization on a near-global aqua-planet simulation with 4-km resolution. In 2019, they couple a network trained by coarse-graining a near-global cloud-resolving simulation to the dynamical core of a general circulation model with 160 km resolution.
-
March 2020
Stabilizing convection networks
In March 2020, he posts "Interpreting and Stabilizing Machine-learning Parametrizations of Convection" with Tom Beucler, Michael Pritchard and Christopher Bretherton. The paper introduces tools for interpreting neural-network parameterizations, which often cause dramatic instability when coupled to atmospheric fluid dynamics.
-
By 2023
Vulcan, Ai2 and the ACE emulator
He works with Bretherton at Vulcan and the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) after his University of Washington fellowship. In December 2023, AI2 introduces ACE, the AI2 Climate Emulator, a neural-network atmospheric model that runs stably for at least 100 years; he contributes as an NVIDIA collaborator alongside Karthik Kashinath, Mike Pritchard and Boris Bonev.
-
2023
A NeurIPS award for ClimSim
He is one of the coauthors of ClimSim: A large multi-scale dataset for hybrid physics-ML climate emulation, which receives an Outstanding Paper Award in the Datasets and Benchmarks track at NeurIPS 2023. The dataset holds 5.7 billion pairs of input and output vectors from multi-scale climate simulations.
-
May 2025
Climate in a Bottle
In May 2025, he is first author of Climate in a Bottle (cBottle), a generative diffusion-based framework that emulates global 5 km climate simulations and reanalysis on the HEALPix grid. It works in two stages, a coarse-resolution generator conditioned on sea surface temperatures and solar position, followed by a patch-based 16x super-resolution stage.
-
As of October 2026
Senior research scientist at NVIDIA
He is a Senior Research Scientist at NVIDIA and a member of its Climate and Weather Simulation Research Lab, which Mike Pritchard leads and which was founded in 2022.
