Mong Li Lee
Also known as Lee Mong Li, Lee Mong Li Janice
Mong Li Lee is a computer scientist at the National University of Singapore whose data management research reaches into deep learning for health screening and into the study of online misinformation. She won the IEEE Singapore Information Technology Gold Medal in 1989 as the top computer science student and was a visiting Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999. With Wynne Hsu and Tien Yin Wong, she shared the 2014 President's Technology Award for ocular image analysis technology, and in 2017 she coauthored a JAMA paper on a deep learning system for diabetic retinopathy. Singapore's inaugural 100 Women in Tech list named her in 2020. She is a professor of computer science at NUS and Director of its Centre for Trusted Internet and Community.

Timeline
-
1989
IEEE Singapore gold medal
She receives the IEEE Singapore Information Technology Gold Medal in 1989 as the top student in the Computer Science program. Her B.Sc. (Hons 1), M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science all come from the National University of Singapore.
-
1999–2000
Wisconsin-Madison and QUIQ
She is a visiting Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the USA in 1999 and a consultant at QUIQ in the USA in 2000.
-
2014
A President's Technology Award
In 2014, she shares Singapore's President's Technology Award with Wynne Hsu and Tien Yin Wong for novel ocular image analysis technology that screens and evaluates significant clinical problems in eye and vascular diseases. The platform, developed in collaboration with the Singapore Eye Research Institute and A*STAR's Institute for Infocomm Research, lets doctors detect and track the progression of three major eye diseases that cause blindness.
-
2014
Convolutional networks for eye screening
She coauthors a 2014 paper on transformed representations for convolutional neural networks in diabetic retinopathy screening with Gilbert Lim, Wynne Hsu and Tien Yin Wong, published at the AAAI Workshop on Modern Artificial Intelligence for Health Analytics.
-
2017
Deep learning for diabetic retinopathy
In 2017, she is among the coauthors, with Wynne Hsu, Tien Yin Wong and others, of a JAMA paper on a deep learning system for diabetic retinopathy and related eye diseases, built from retinal images of multiethnic populations with diabetes. The screening system examines retinal fundus photographs for diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma, and it is validated on nearly half a million retinal images.
-
2017
Tools against misinformation
She coauthors iFact, an interactive framework to assess claims from tweets, for the CIKM conference with Wee Yong Lim and Wynne Hsu in 2017. Her ICDE 2017 paper with Chonggang Song and Wynne Hsu, on temporal influence blocking, looks at minimizing the effect of misinformation in social networks.
-
2020
Singapore 100 Women in Tech
In 2020, she is named in the inaugural Singapore 100 Women in Tech list, alongside NUS Computing colleagues Wynne Hsu, Tulika Mitra and Kwong Yuk Wah.
-
As of October 2026
Professor and centre director
She is a professor of computer science at NUS and Director of the NUS Centre for Trusted Internet and Community. She is on the NUS AI Lab faculty, with interests in data analytics, deep learning and AI in healthcare, and her ongoing projects include Digital Information Resilience and JARVIS_DHL, which uses AI to transform chronic care for diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia.
