Michal Haindl
Michal Haindl is a Czech researcher in pattern recognition and computer vision whose models of visual texture rest on Markov random fields and probabilistic mixtures. He earned his Ph.D. from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1983 and a Sc.D. in 2001, and he held posts at the University of Newcastle, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, CWI in Amsterdam and INRIA before returning to the Institute of Information Theory and Automation (UTIA) in 1995. The International Association for Pattern Recognition made him a Fellow in 2004 for contributions to model-based pattern recognition. With Jiří Filip, he published a survey of bidirectional texture function modelling in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence in 2009 and the book Visual Texture in 2013, and a team he led won the 2011 Award of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. He is head of the Pattern Recognition Department at UTIA.
Timeline
-
1983
Ph.D. from the Czechoslovak Academy
He earns his Ph.D. from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1983, after graduating from the Czech Technical University in Prague. From 1983 on, he researches topics in image analysis and pattern recognition.
-
By 1995
Posts abroad and return to UTIA
His career includes positions at the Institute of Information Theory and Automation (UTIA) of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, the University of Newcastle, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, CWI in Amsterdam and INRIA in Rocquencourt. He returns to UTIA in 1995.
-
2001
A Sc.D. degree
He obtains the Sc.D. degree in 2001.
-
2004
An IAPR Fellowship
He becomes a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) in 2004, for contributions to the theory and practice of model-based pattern recognition and for service to IAPR. IAPR President Rangachar Kasturi presents the award to him at Cambridge.
-
2009–2010
BTF survey and texture models
With Jiří Filip, he publishes the survey "Bidirectional Texture Function Modeling: A State of the Art Survey" in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence in 2009. A 2010 ERCIM News article by Haindl, Filip and Martin Hatka presents multidimensional probabilistic models based on Markov random fields or probabilistic mixtures, with compression of material measurements of up to 1:1,000,000.
-
2011
Academy of Sciences Award
In 2011, the UTIA team he leads receives the Award of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic for outstanding results of major scientific importance. The awarded work is "Mathematical modeling of visual properties of surface materials".
-
2013
The book Visual Texture
With Jiří Filip, he publishes Visual Texture: Accurate Material Appearance Measurement, Representation and Modeling with Springer in 2013, in the Advances in Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition series. The book surveys the state of the art in multidimensional, physically correct visual texture modeling.
