Researcher

Michal Irani

Michal Irani researches computer vision, AI and visual information in brain activity. She received her PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1994, worked at Sarnoff Research Center and joined the Weizmann Institute in 1997. Her research includes internal image and video statistics, deep networks trained on a single visual input, and reconstruction from fMRI signals. She served as dean of Weizmann’s Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science from 2022 to 2025. She received the 2025 PAMI Distinguished Researcher Award.

Timeline

  1. 1994–1997

    From doctoral work to Weizmann

Irani received her PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1994. She worked at Sarnoff Research Center from 1993 to 1996, then joined the Weizmann Institute in 1997.

  2. As of October 2026

    Learning from internal image patterns

Irani studies the internal statistics of natural images and videos. One of her methods is deep internal learning: training a network on a single image or video. This uses repeated information within the visual input itself.

  3. 2022–2025

    Research and academic leadership

She served as dean of Weizmann’s Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science from 2022 to 2025. Her research interests include computer vision, AI and decoding information from brain activity. Her research also includes reconstruction of visual data from fMRI signals.

  4. 2025

    Computer vision recognition

Irani received the PAMI Distinguished Researcher Award in 2025. This recognition accompanies a research program spanning images, video and learned visual models.
