Researcher

Maurício G. C. Resende

Maurício Resende is an operations researcher whose GRASP metaheuristic addresses hard combinatorial optimization problems. He earned electrical engineering and operations research degrees in Brazil and the United States, joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1988, and developed GRASP with Tom Feo. In 2016, he became an INFORMS Fellow and coauthored Optimization by GRASP; at Amazon, he helped develop algorithms for Middle Mile routing. He coauthored a 2025 paper on GRASP with path relinking and, as of October 2026, is a research scientist and visiting professor in operations research and optimization.

Timeline

  1. 1962–1973

School in Brazil and the US

In 1962, he moves to the United States, where he attends grades 2 through 5. After returning to Rio de Janeiro, he attends Escola Americana through grade 12 and graduates in June 1973.

  2. 1978–1987

    Engineering and operations research degrees

He earns an electrical engineering degree with a systems engineering concentration at PUC-Rio in 1978, an M.S. in operations research at Georgia Tech in 1979, and a Ph.D. in operations research at Berkeley in 1987. At Berkeley, he studies semiconductor manufacturing scheduling under C. Roger Glassey.

  3. 1988–1989

Bell Labs and the GRASP method

He joins AT&T Bell Laboratories' Mathematical Foundations of Computing Department in 1988. He develops GRASP with Tom Feo and publishes the metaheuristic's first paper in 1989.

  4. 2016

    An INFORMS Fellowship

INFORMS names him a 2016 Fellow for contributions to the development and application of optimization metaheuristics, including GRASP.

  5. 2016

    A book on GRASP

He coauthors Optimization by GRASP with Celso C. Ribeiro in 2016. The book explains the GRASP metaheuristic and presents case studies for hard combinatorial optimization problems.

  6. By 2021

    Amazon Middle Mile routing

In 2016, he joins Amazon's Middle Mile team as one of its few scientists. By 2021, he is a principal research scientist, and the team uses route evaluation and algorithmic techniques to model regulatory and facility constraints and reduce surface transportation costs.

  7. 2025

    GRASP with path relinking

He coauthors a 2025 paper on GRASP with path relinking, published in the European Journal of Operational Research.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research scientist and visiting professor

As of October 2026, he is a research scientist and visiting professor in operations research and optimization.
