Researcher

Jon Louis Bentley

Jon Louis Bentley is a computer scientist whose 1975 k-d tree organizes multidimensional data for nearest-neighbor searches used in machine learning. He earned degrees in mathematical sciences at Stanford and computer science at the University of North Carolina, then taught at Carnegie Mellon. At Bell Labs, he developed languages for algorithm analysis and software for telephones and switching systems. His Programming Pearls column became two books in 1986 and 1988, and he joined Avaya Labs Research after Bell Labs. As of October 2026, he continues research in high-performance library software and lectures at universities.

Timeline

  1. 1974–1976

    Mathematics and computer science degrees

He earns a B.S. in mathematical sciences at Stanford in 1974, then an M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science at the University of North Carolina in 1976.

  2. 1975

    The k-d tree

In 1975, he develops the k-d tree as a multidimensional binary-search structure for associative searching. Its nearest-neighbor use supports common machine-learning techniques.

  3. By 1982

    Teaching at Carnegie Mellon

After earning a 1976 Ph.D., he teaches computer science at Carnegie Mellon for six years.

  4. 1982–2001

    Research at Bell Labs

He joins Bell Labs in 1982 and becomes a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in 1988. His projects include little languages for algorithm analysis, library software, consumer telephones and switching systems.

  5. 1986–1988

    Programming Pearls in print

His Programming Pearls column for Communications of the ACM becomes two books, published in 1986 and 1988.

  6. 2000

    An Excellence in Programming Award

In 2000, he receives the Dr. Dobb’s Excellence in Programming Award.

  7. 2001–2013

    Avaya Labs Research

After leaving Bell Labs in 2001, he joins Avaya Labs Research, works on high-quality software and enterprise communication systems, and retires from Avaya in 2013.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research in library software

He continues research in high-performance library software for a range of architectures, lectures frequently at universities, and serves on computer science advisory boards.
