Marshall Schor
Also known as Marshall I. Schor
Marshall Schor is an AI researcher whose work spans Rete production-system rule matching, tools for unstructured data, and IBM Watson. His 1986 paper described RETE improvements; he coauthored a 1990 study of demand-driven matching and a generalized match algorithm with Ho Soo Lee in 1992. In 2004, he wrote about a Java-friendly interface for UIMA's Common Analysis System, and the Apache Software Foundation appointed him Vice President of Apache UIMA in 2010. He was a member of IBM's Watson Team when it received the 2013 AAAI Feigenbaum Prize, resigned as UIMA vice president in 2020, and is an Apache UIMA committer as of October 2026.

Timeline
-
1986
Rete pattern matching
In 1986, Schor coauthors a paper describing augmentations to the RETE algorithm, used to match rule predicates with data. The paper describes these improvements in the experimental production system YES/OPS and aims to improve efficiency and rule clarity.
-
1990
Demand-driven Rete matching
He coauthors a 1990 paper on dynamically augmenting generalized Rete networks for demand-driven matching and rule updating.
-
1992
Generalized Rete algorithms
With Ho Soo Lee, he presents a match algorithm in 1992 that handles generalized Rete networks with arbitrary pattern associations. It also makes matching results available on demand.
-
2004
UIMA's Java-friendly interface
At IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, he authors a 2004 technical report on a Java-friendly interface to UIMA's Common Analysis System.
-
2010
Vice President of Apache UIMA
The Apache Software Foundation appoints him Vice President of Apache UIMA in March 2010.
-
2013
IBM Watson's Feigenbaum Prize
In 2013, AAAI awards the Feigenbaum Prize to IBM's Watson Team for its synthesis of symbolic knowledge representation, natural language understanding, and statistical machine learning in real-time factual question answering. Schor is among the team members.
-
2020
Leaving the Apache UIMA chair
In November 2020, he resigns as Vice President of Apache UIMA, and the Apache board appoints Richard Eckart de Castilho as his successor.
-
As of October 2026
Apache UIMA committer
As of October 2026, he is a committer on the Apache UIMA project. The project provides frameworks, tools, and annotators for analyzing unstructured text, audio, and video.
