Michel Brune
Also known as M. Brune
Michel Brune is a physicist at the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel whose experiments with cavities and circular Rydberg atoms probe quantum measurement, entanglement and quantum simulation. After studying at the École normale supérieure from 1983 to 1987, he earned a PhD in 1988 under Serge Haroche and defended his habilitation in 2001. Between 1996 and 2007, he coauthored papers on quantum measurement, entanglement in a cavity and quantum jumps of light, and in 1998 he shared the Grand prix Ampère with Jean-Michel Raimond. In 2018, he coauthored a Physical Review X proposal for a quantum simulator of spin-1/2 arrays built from laser-trapped circular Rydberg atoms, and in 2023 he coauthored the first report of such atoms trapped in a programmable array of optical bottle beams. He leads the Rydberg atoms team hosted at the Institut de Physique du Collège de France.

Timeline
-
1983–1988
A PhD under Serge Haroche
Born in 1964, he studies at the École normale supérieure from 1983 to 1987. In 1988, he defends his PhD under Serge Haroche, with doctoral work on the realization of a two-photon micromaser.
-
1996
Observing a quantum meter decohere
In 1996, he is first author, with Serge Haroche, Jean-Michel Raimond and colleagues, of the Physical Review Letters paper "Observing the Progressive Decoherence of the "Meter" in a Quantum Measurement".
-
1998
The Grand prix Ampère
In 1998, he shares the Grand prix Ampère de l'Électricité de France, given by the Académie des sciences, with Jean-Michel Raimond, his colleague in the cavity quantum electrodynamics group of the Kastler-Brossel Laboratory.
-
2001
A review on cavity entanglement
In 2001, he defends his habilitation. He coauthors with Jean-Michel Raimond and Serge Haroche the Reviews of Modern Physics article "Manipulating quantum entanglement with atoms and photons in a cavity".
-
2007
Quantum jumps of light
In 2007, Nature publishes "Quantum jumps of light recording the birth and death of a photon in a cavity", by Sébastien Gleyzes and eight coauthors, among them Michel Brune, Jean-Michel Raimond and Serge Haroche. Microwave photons stored in a superconducting cavity are probed by a stream of atoms, and the signals record the birth, life and death of individual photons.
-
2018
A circular-atom quantum simulator
In 2018, he coauthors in Physical Review X, with Jean-Michel Raimond, Clément Sayrin, Serge Haroche and colleagues, a proposal for quantum simulation of spin-1/2 arrays with laser-trapped circular Rydberg atoms. The authors expect trapping lifetimes in the minute range.
-
2023–2024
Trapping circular Rydberg atoms
In 2023, he coauthors a Physical Review Letters paper reporting the first laser-trapping of circular Rydberg atoms in a programmable array of optical bottle beams. In April 2024, he and Jean Dalibard organize the Collège de France colloquium "Atomes de Rydberg et simulation quantique". In 2024, he is also a CNRS director of research, a part-time professor at École Polytechnique and director of the Jung Team Incubator at the Physics Institute of the Collège de France.
-
As of October 2026
Leading the Rydberg atoms team
He leads the Rydberg atoms team of Laboratoire Kastler Brossel, hosted at the Institut de Physique du Collège de France. Created by Serge Haroche and formerly named cavity quantum electrodynamics, the team studies quantum physics with circular Rydberg atoms.
