Konstantinos Kamnitsas
Konstantinos Kamnitsas is an Oxford associate professor whose deep-learning research aims to make medical-image analysis reliable for clinical use. He earned a diploma in electrical and computer engineering in Thessaloniki, an MSc in computing science at Imperial, and a 2019 PhD on neural networks for MRI and CT. His work includes DeepMedic for brain-lesion segmentation and a 2023 paper on class-specific training and test-time augmentation. He became a lecturer at Birmingham in 2021, joined Oxford in 2022, and is a Wolfson College fellow and healthcare-data-science CDT co-director as of October 2026.
Timeline
-
2010–2013
Electrical engineering and computing
He earns a diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2010 and an MSc in Computing Science at Imperial College London in 2013.
-
2016
DeepMedic for brain lesions
In 2016, he and seven coauthors post a preprint proposing a dual-pathway, 11-layer 3D convolutional neural network for brain-lesion segmentation. DeepMedic pairs a multi-scale 3D network with a fully connected conditional random field, and the software is publicly available.
-
2019
A PhD in medical imaging
He completes a PhD at Imperial College London in 2019, where he develops 3D neural networks for volumetric MRI and CT data and methods to improve generalization across heterogeneous data.
-
2021–2022
Birmingham lecturer and Oxford move
He becomes a Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Birmingham in 2021 and joins Oxford as an Associate Professor in 2022, while retaining an Honorary Research Fellow role at Birmingham from 2022. In February 2022, he joins Wolfson College as a Non-Tutorial Fellow.
-
2023
Class-specific data augmentation
In 2023, he coauthors a medical-image segmentation paper that learns class-specific training-time augmentation and jointly optimizes it with test-time augmentation to align the training and test data distributions.
-
As of October 2026
Associate Professor at Oxford
As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor of Engineering Science (Medical Imaging) at Oxford, a Non-Tutorial Fellow at Wolfson College and co-director of the EPSRC CDT in Healthcare Data Science. His research develops deep-learning methods for reliable medical-image analysis. In May 2026, he joins an Oxford–Cape Town programme on multimodal imaging to improve disease diagnosis and understanding.
