Researcher

Josh Givens

Josh Givens is a computational statistician whose machine-learning research addresses missing data and treatment-effect analysis. He earned a first-class MMath at Bath, completed a PhD in Computational Statistics at Bristol, and worked in biostatistics at Amgen and quantitative research at G-Research. His papers adapt density-ratio estimation and score matching to incomplete data and develop quantile methods for treatment effects; his work won a best poster award in 2024 and an ICML Outstanding Paper Award in 2025. He is a Research Scientist at Isomorphic Labs.

Timeline

  1. 2016–2021

    Mathematics with placement at Bath

In 2021, he earns a first-class MMath in Mathematics with Placement at the University of Bath.

  2. 2018–2019

    A biostatistics placement at Amgen

From June 2018 to September 2019, he completes a yearlong biostatistics placement at Amgen.

  3. 2021–2025

A Bristol PhD in computational statistics

He completes a PhD in Computational Statistics at Bristol's COMPASS CDT in 2025. His thesis on differential model estimation with missing data is supervised by Song Liu and Henry Reeve.

  4. 2023

    Density ratios with missing data

At AISTATS 2023, he coauthors a method for density-ratio estimation when data are missing not at random. It adapts KLIEP to restore consistency and extends Neyman–Pearson classification to that setting.

  5. 2024

Quantile contrasts and a poster award

In 2024, he coauthors “Conditional Outcome Equivalence: A Quantile Alternative to CATE,” which introduces the conditional quantile comparator for heterogeneous treatment effects. He also wins a best poster award at the 2024 Japan Machine Learning Summer School.

  6. 2025

    G-Research and an ICML award

From June 2025 to September 2025, he works as a Quantitative Research Intern at G-Research. His paper “Score Matching with Missing Data” receives an Outstanding Paper Award at ICML 2025 and adapts score matching to incomplete observations through importance-weighting and variational methods.

  7. 2026

    Direct estimation of quantile contrasts

In 2026, he coauthors “Direct Doubly Robust Estimation of Conditional Quantile Contrasts,” which proposes a direct estimator of the conditional quantile comparator for heterogeneous treatment-effect analysis.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research scientist at Isomorphic Labs

He is a Research Scientist at Isomorphic Labs.
