Researcher

Jocelyne Troccaz

Jocelyne Troccaz is a medical-robotics researcher whose work connects machine learning and medical imaging with computer-assisted surgery. She earned a computer-science PhD in 1986, shifted her research to medical applications in 1990, and co-patented a robot-guided surgical instrument in 1992. She coauthored a machine-learning study on prostate brachytherapy and was a LabEx CAMI project coordinator at its 2024 closing event. She received the CNRS Silver Medal in 2015, became an IEEE Fellow in 2018, received the MICCAI Enduring Impact Award in 2022, and joined the Académie des sciences in 2022. As of October 2026, she is a researcher in TIMC's GMCAO team and a CNRS research director emerita.

    A PhD in robot programming

She earns a PhD in computer science at the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble in 1986, focused on automatic robot programming for industrial and space robotics. In 1990, she redirects her research toward health applications after encountering medical uses for robotics.

  2. 1992

    A robot-guided surgical instrument

In 1992, she co-patents a surgical instrument guided by a robot and moved by the surgeon.

  3. 2015

    A CNRS Silver Medal

The CNRS awards her its Silver Medal in 2015.

  4. 2018

    IEEE Fellow

She becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2018.

  5. 2021

    Machine learning for prostate brachytherapy

In 2021, she coauthors a paper on machine learning and image registration for automatic seed localization in 3D ultrasound images for prostate brachytherapy.

  6. 2022

A MICCAI award and Academy election

She receives MICCAI's Enduring Impact Award in 2022. In December 2022, the Académie des sciences elects her as a member.

  7. 2024

    Coordinating LabEx CAMI

At LabEx CAMI's closing event in November 2024, she is named among the project's coordinators. The event marks 12 years of work in computer-assisted medical and surgical interventions.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research in the GMCAO team

In 2026, she is a researcher in TIMC's GMCAO team and a CNRS research director emerita at TIMC, affiliated with Inserm and Université Grenoble Alpes. Her work covers medical robotics, image-guided robots, and medical-image processing.
