Researcher

James McLurkin

James McLurkin is a roboticist whose work explores how algorithms let small autonomous robots coordinate in swarms. He earned an electrical engineering degree at MIT in 1994, built ant-inspired robots there in 1995, and stayed as a research scientist; by 2002, he had earned an M.S. at Berkeley and led swarm research at iRobot. He won the 2003 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, completed graduate study in computer science at MIT, and began a University of Washington postdoc in 2008. At Rice, he began the R-one project in 2009 and directed a robotics lab that used the robots in freshman engineering classes in 2011. In 2022, he was a senior hardware engineer at Google Research; as of October 2026, he researches algorithms for autonomous robot swarms.

Timeline

  1. 1994–1995

    MIT and robotic ants

In 1994, he completes his S.B. in electrical engineering at MIT. As a senior in 1995, he creates matchbook-sized robotic ants for his undergraduate thesis and stays at MIT as a research scientist after graduation.

  2. By 2002

    Berkeley and iRobot

After MIT, he earns an M.S. in electrical engineering at Berkeley and returns to Boston as iRobot’s lead research scientist. By 2002, he designs and builds tiny swarm robots.

  3. 2003

    A Lemelson-MIT prize

He wins the 2003 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize for swarm microrobots that use natural principles to carry out cooperative tasks.

  4. 2008

    Postdoc at Washington

He completes an S.M. and PhD in computer science at MIT. In 2008, he begins a postdoc at the University of Washington, using probabilistic models for algorithm development.

  5. 2009

    Arriving at Rice

He arrives at Rice University in 2009 and begins work on the R-one, an inexpensive robot designed for large swarms.

  6. 2011

    Robots in engineering class

In 2011, he directs a Rice University robotics laboratory and uses R-one robots in an introductory engineering course for freshmen.

  7. 2022

    Google Research keynote

In 2022, Tektronix features him as its Innovation Forum keynote speaker and identifies him as a senior hardware engineer at Google Research.

  8. As of October 2026

    Programming robot swarms

As of October 2026, he researches and develops algorithms to program autonomous robot swarms, using nature as a model.
