Richard G. Baraniuk

Also known as Richard Gordon Baraniuk

Richard Baraniuk is an electrical and computer engineering professor at Rice University whose research spans signal processing and deep learning. With Kevin Kelly, he developed the single-pixel camera, and the National Academy of Engineering elected him in 2022 for foundational contributions to compressive sensing. He launched Connexions in 1999, one of the first initiatives to offer free, open-source textbooks, and it later became OpenStax. From 2020 to 2025 he served as project director of the Office of Naval Research's Foundations of Deep Learning initiative, and the IEEE gave him its Kilby Signal Processing Medal in 2025. As of October 2026, he is a professor at Rice University and the founder and director of OpenStax.
