Researcher

James K. Baker

Also known as Jim Baker

Jim Baker is a speech-recognition researcher who applied hidden Markov processes to speech recognition during his Carnegie Mellon doctorate. After working at the Institute for Defense Analysis, IBM and Verbex, he co-founded Dragon Systems with Janet Baker in 1982. Dragon Systems supplied Apricot Computer with a personal computer's first speech-recognition capability in 1984, introduced audiomining in 1994, and released Dragon NaturallySpeaking in 1997 as its first general-purpose commercial dictation system. Baker directed research at Johns Hopkins University's Center of Excellence in Human Language from 2007 to 2009 and shared the 2012 IEEE speech award with Janet Baker. As of October 2026, his research focuses on deep learning and human-guided AI.

Timeline

  1. 1963–1975

    IDA and a speech doctorate

He works as a staff member at the Institute for Defense Analysis from 1963 to 1972 and earns an A.B. at Princeton and a computer science Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon in 1975. There, he applies hidden Markov processes to speech recognition in his Ph.D. work.

  2. 1974–1982

    IBM and Verbex roles

From 1974 to 1979, he is a research staff member in IBM's Continuous Speech Recognition Group. From 1979 to 1982, he serves as Verbex (Exxon Enterprises) vice president for advanced development.

  3. 1982

    Co-founding Dragon Systems

He and Janet Baker co-found Dragon Systems in 1982. He serves as the company's CEO and chairman.

  4. 1984

    Speech recognition for Apricot

In 1984, Dragon Systems provides Apricot Computer with the first speech-recognition capability for a personal computer. The system lets users open files and run programs with spoken commands.

  5. 1994–1997

    Audiomining and NaturallySpeaking

Dragon Systems introduces audiomining in 1994. In 1997, it releases Dragon NaturallySpeaking as the first general-purpose commercial dictation system. The system recognizes large-vocabulary, natural-language continuous speech.

  6. 2007–2009

    Johns Hopkins language research

From 2007 to 2009, he directs research and serves as chief scientist for Johns Hopkins University's Center of Excellence in Human Language.

  7. 2012

    An IEEE speech award

He shares the 2012 IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award with Janet Baker for fundamental contributions to the theory and practice of automatic speech recognition.

  8. As of October 2026

    Human-guided AI research

In 2026, his research focuses on deep learning and human-guided AI. The systems are designed to be understandable, explainable, and sensible in their decisions.
