Jacob A Zavatone-Veth
Also known as Jacob Zavatone-Veth, Jacob Andreas Zavatone-Veth
Jacob A Zavatone-Veth is a researcher whose work sits at the intersection of theoretical neuroscience, statistical physics, and machine learning. He earned a physics degree at Yale in 2019 and a Harvard physics PhD in 2024 under Cengiz Pehlevan, with a thesis on the statistical mechanics of Bayesian inference and learning in neural networks. In 2024 he received an NIH Director's Early Independence Award and the American Physical Society Dissertation Award in Statistical and Nonlinear Physics. His 2026 paper with Binxu Wang and Pehlevan on the consistency of diffusion models earned an Outstanding Paper Honorable Mention at ICML. He is a Junior Fellow of the Harvard Society of Fellows and will join The Rockefeller University as an Assistant Professor and Head of Laboratory in January 2027.

Timeline
-
2019
Physics at Yale
He earns a BS in physics at Yale in 2019. As an undergraduate he works with Damon Clark on visual motion detection and locomotor coordination in fruit flies.
-
2024
A Harvard physics PhD
He completes a PhD in physics at Harvard University in 2024 under Cengiz Pehlevan. His thesis is titled "Statistical mechanics of Bayesian inference and learning in neural networks".
-
2024
NIH Early Independence Award
In 2024, he receives an NIH Director's Early Independence Award and the American Physical Society Dissertation Award in Statistical and Nonlinear Physics.
-
July 2024
Harvard Society of Fellows
He becomes a Junior Fellow of the Harvard Society of Fellows in July 2024. In November 2024, he also becomes a research scientist at the Harvard Center for Brain Science.
-
March 2026
Efficient coding of smell
In March 2026, a PNAS paper led by Harvard graduate student Juan Carlos Fernández del Castillo, with Farhad Pashakhanloo and him, uses efficient coding to explain why many species share one early olfactory design.
-
2026
An ICML honorable mention
His paper with Binxu Wang and Cengiz Pehlevan, "A Random Matrix Perspective on the Consistency of Diffusion Models", receives an Outstanding Paper Honorable Mention at ICML 2026. It develops a random matrix theory framework that explains why diffusion models trained on different data splits produce strikingly similar outputs.
