Holger R. Roth
Also known as Holger Roth
Holger Roth is a medical-imaging AI researcher whose federated learning work at NVIDIA includes the NVIDIA FLARE SDK and the EXAM study of COVID-19 outcomes. He earned a PhD at University College London, spent 2013 to 2016 as a visiting research fellow at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, and coauthored the 2015 DeepOrgan paper on pancreas segmentation. In June 2018, he joined NVIDIA, and the 2018 MICCAI Young Scientist Publication Impact Award recognized his 2014 paper on lymph node detection. In 2021, he led the experiments in a Nature Medicine study of twenty hospitals that built EXAM, and in 2022 he was first author of the paper introducing NVIDIA FLARE. He is a Principal Federated Learning Scientist at NVIDIA, where he leads applied federated learning research.
Timeline
-
2003–2013
From Würzburg to a UCL PhD
He starts an electrical engineering degree at the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt in 2003 and earns an MSc in vision, image and signal processing at Heriot-Watt University in 2008. In 2009, he begins a PhD at University College London's Centre for Medical Image Computing, supervised by David Hawkes and Jamie McClelland, and works on the registration of highly deformable organs such as the colon until 2013.
-
2013–2016
NIH fellowship and DeepOrgan
From 2013 to 2016, he is a Visiting Research Fellow in the Imaging Biomarkers and Computer-Aided Diagnosis Laboratory at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, working with Ronald Summers and Le Lu. In 2015, he coauthors DeepOrgan with Lu, Summers and others, a multi-level deep convolutional network method for segmenting the pancreas in abdominal CT scans.
-
August 2016–May 2018
Assistant professor in Nagoya
From August 2016 to May 2018, he is an Assistant Professor (Research) at Mori Laboratory, Nagoya University, in Japan.
-
2018
A MICCAI publication impact award
In 2018, he receives the MICCAI Young Scientist Publication Impact Award for his 2014 paper "A New 2.5D Representation for Lymph Node Detection Using Random Sets of Deep Convolutional Neural Network Observations".
-
June 2018
Joining NVIDIA in Bethesda
In June 2018, he joins NVIDIA as a Senior Applied Research Scientist in its deep learning for medical imaging research group in Bethesda, Maryland.
-
2021
EXAM for COVID-19 outcomes
In 2021, he coauthors the Nature Medicine paper on EXAM, a federated learning model that predicts the future oxygen requirements of symptomatic COVID-19 patients from vital signs, laboratory data and chest X-rays. He leads the experiments in the study, which brings together twenty hospitals around the globe.
-
2022
The NVIDIA FLARE SDK
In 2022, he is first author of the paper introducing NVIDIA FLARE, an open-source SDK for federated learning that works with PyTorch, TensorFlow, XGBoost or NumPy workflows and supports homomorphic encryption and differential privacy. The paper is accepted at the International Workshop on Federated Learning at NeurIPS 2022.
-
As of October 2026
Principal federated learning scientist
He is a Principal Federated Learning Scientist at NVIDIA, where he leads applied federated learning research and contributes to the open-source NVIDIA FLARE framework. In 2026, he coauthors "Federated Learning in Healthcare: From Research to Real-World Deployment" in the Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering with Spyridon Bakas, Xiaoxiao Li and Prashant Shah.
