Ho Chuen Kam

Also known as Calvin Kam, Calvin Ho Chuen Kam, Kam Ho Chuen

Ho Chuen Kam, who goes by Calvin, is a computer vision researcher and lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). After a first-class honours B.Sc. in computer science at Hong Kong Baptist University, he earned a CUHK Ph.D. on computer vision and human understanding. With Kin Hong Wong, he coauthored papers on Kinect-based 3-D reconstruction and pose tracking, including a 2018 paper on improving ArUco marker tracking with a Kalman filter. In 2022 he was first author of a paper on face mask detection on NVIDIA edge devices. He is a lecturer in CUHK's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, where he teaches digital literacy and supervises final-year projects such as surgical instrument counting with YOLO models.

Timeline

  1. 2014–2015

    Pervasive sensing and visual tracking

He is among the authors of "SmartMood: Toward Pervasive Mood Tracking and Analysis for Manic Episode Detection", published in IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems in 2014. In 2015, he coauthors "A robust mean-transform based visual tracker" with Kin Hong Wong and others at the IEEE International Conference on Information and Automation.

  2. 2016

    Dual back-to-back Kinects

In 2016, he is first author of "Dual Back-to-Back Kinects for 3-D Reconstruction", written with Kin Hong Wong and Baiwu Zhang for the International Symposium on Visual Computing. He also coauthors "Calibration of multiple Kinect depth sensors for full surface model reconstruction" with Wong and colleagues in 2016.

  3. 2017–2018

    Pose tracking with Kalman filters

In 2017, he coauthors "Robust and efficient pose tracking using perspective-four-point algorithm and Kalman filter" and "Face pose tracking using the four-point algorithm" with Kin Hong Wong. In 2018, he is first author of "An improvement on ArUco marker for pose tracking using Kalman filter" with Ying Kin Yu and Wong, and coauthors a paper on hand gesture input that combines computer vision, an inertial measurement unit and flex sensors.

  4. 2021–2022

    Action recognition and face masks

In 2021, he is sole author of "Robust Combined Approach for Human Action Recognition and Medical Diagnostics", listed in PQDT-Global. In 2022, he is first author of "Effective real-time face mask detection on NVIDIA edge devices" in HKIE Transactions, and he has collaborated with NVIDIA and students on research projects.

  5. Since 2022

    Teaching digital literacy at CUHK

After working as a Data Scientist and STEM instructor at Blueinno Technology, he teaches ENGG1003, Digital Literacy and Computational Thinking, at CUHK from 2022, and ENGG1110, Problem Solving By Programming, from 2023. He holds a CUHK Ph.D. focused on computer vision and human understanding and a first-class honours B.Sc. in computer science from Hong Kong Baptist University.

  6. 2023–2025

    Surgical counting projects

He supervises final-year projects on surgical instrument counting: a YOLOv8 object recognition system in 2023, a comparison of YOLOv10, YOLOv9 and RT-DETRv2 in 2024, and YOLO and RT-DETR models with Android edge deployment in 2025. Other supervised projects include a YOLOv8 recycling app in 2023 and a food-photo calorie estimator in 2025.

  7. Since 2025

    Hong Kong ICT curriculum committee

In 2025, he becomes a member of the CDC-HKEAA Committee on Information and Communication Technology, a specialist group under the KLA Committee on Technology Education and the HKEAA Public Examinations Board, for its 2025–2027 term. He joins as a lecturer in CUHK's Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

  8. As of October 2026

    Lecturer in computer science

He is a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at CUHK, based in the Office of Digital Literacy Education at Chung Chi College, with research interests in computer vision, object detection, sensor fusion and EduTech. He teaches ENGG1003 in the 2026T1 term and serves on a college AI Ethics and Digital Literacy Committee from 2026.
