Hervé Delingette

Also known as Herve Delingette

Hervé Delingette is an Inria research director whose work in medical image analysis and computational physiology ranges from personalized digital hearts to deep learning for cardiac MRI. In 1994 he earned a PhD at École Centrale under Nicholas Ayache and became a junior researcher at Inria Sophia Antipolis, after nearly three years as a visiting researcher in the robotics laboratory of Carnegie Mellon University. He presented the personalized digital heart at the Académie nationale de médecine in 2011, coauthored a deep learning method for cardiac MRI segmentation in 2018, and became a MICCAI Fellow in 2019. He and Maxime Sermesant received the 2023 Inria–Dassault Systèmes Innovation Prize, and in July 2025 he stepped down as scientific director of the Université Côte d'Azur IdEx after ten years of work. He is a chair holder at 3IA Côte d'Azur and leads LungMark in the Epione team, a project that applies supervised and unsupervised learning to lung cancer, COPD and pulmonary fibrosis.

Timeline

  1. By 1994

    From Carnegie Mellon to Inria

After graduating from École Centrale de Paris, he spends nearly three years as a visiting researcher in the robotics laboratory of Carnegie Mellon University and also works at NTT's research laboratory in Yokosuka, Japan. He earns a PhD at École Centrale in 1994 under Nicholas Ayache, with a dissertation on modeling, deforming and recognizing three-dimensional objects with simplex meshes. In 1994, he becomes a junior researcher (chargé de recherche) at Inria Sophia Antipolis, where he studied for his doctorate.

  2. 2011

    The personalized digital heart

In November 2011, he presents a scientific communication on the personalized digital heart at the Académie nationale de médecine, with Nicholas Ayache and Maxime Sermesant. It describes work by Inria's Asclepios project team on digital cardiac models that reproduce the anatomy and physiology of individual patients.

  3. 2012

    Editing the MICCAI 2012 proceedings

In 2012, he is a co-editor, with Nicholas Ayache, Polina Golland and Kensaku Mori, of the proceedings of MICCAI 2012, the 15th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention, held in Nice in October 2012.

  4. 2016–2025

    Directing RISE and the IdEx

In 2016, he becomes head of the RISE academy of excellence (Networks, Information and Digital Society) at Université Côte d'Azur, and in 2018 he joins the executive committee of EUR DS4H. After ten years of work for the community, including the direction of the IdEx, he steps down as its scientific director in July 2025.

  5. 2018

    Deep learning for cardiac MRI

In 2018, he coauthors "3D Consistent & Robust Segmentation of Cardiac Images by Deep Learning with Spatial Propagation" with Qiao Zheng, Nicolas Duchateau and Nicholas Ayache. The method segments short-axis cardiac MRI stacks slice by slice, from the base to the apex.

  6. 2019

    A MICCAI Fellowship

The MICCAI Society elects him a Fellow in 2019 for contributions to deformable models for medical image analysis, computational physiology, real-time surgery simulation and computer-assisted interventions.

  7. 2023

    Innovation prize for digital cardiology

In 2023, he and Maxime Sermesant, both 3IA Côte d'Azur chairholders at Inria, receive the Inria–Dassault Systèmes Innovation Prize. They belong to a personalized digital cardiology team that spans Inria's Epione team, IHU Liryc and inHEART.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research director in Epione

Since July 2025, he devotes himself fully to research as an Inria research director in the Epione team, and he is a chair holder at 3IA Côte d'Azur. He leads LungMark, a Université Côte d'Azur data science project that uses supervised and unsupervised learning to combine biological information and medical imaging for lung cancer, COPD and pulmonary fibrosis.
