Eyal Kushilevitz
Eyal Kushilevitz is a computer scientist whose work connects cryptography and privacy with machine learning. He earned degrees in mathematics and computer science at Bar-Ilan University and the Technion from 1986 to 1991, and coauthored Communication Complexity and a paper on learning algorithms in 1996. He coauthored a paper on private information retrieval in 2000 and became a fellow of the International Association for Cryptologic Research in 2014. His 2019 paper Cryptographic Sensing asked whether a contrived training set could make labeled examples useless without knowing why they were chosen; he coauthored FALCON for private deep learning in 2020. Since October 2025, he is a professor and dean of the Taub Faculty of Computer Science at the Technion, with interests in cryptography, privacy and machine learning.
Timeline
-
1986–1991
Degrees at Bar-Ilan and Technion
He earns a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science from Bar-Ilan University in 1986, an MSc in Computer Science under Oded Goldreich at the Technion in 1989, and a PhD in Computer Science under Benny Chor at the Technion in 1991.
-
1996
Communication Complexity
With Noam Nisan, he coauthors Communication Complexity, published in 1996. Its opening chapter describes tasks that use information distributed among different parts of a system, including processors, parties or players.
-
1996
A composition theorem for learning
In 1996, he coauthors “A Composition Theorem for Learning Algorithms with Applications to Geometric Concept Classes.” It presents a way to combine learning algorithms for simple classes into an algorithm for a more complex class.
-
2000
Private information retrieval
With Yael Gertner, Yuval Ishai and Tal Malkin, he coauthors “Protecting Data Privacy in Private Information Retrieval Schemes” in 2000. It introduces symmetrically-private information retrieval, which protects the privacy of the data and the user.
-
2014
An IACR fellowship
In 2014, he becomes a fellow of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR).
-
2019
Cryptographic sensing
With Yuval Ishai, Rafail Ostrovsky and Amit Sahai, he coauthors Cryptographic Sensing in 2019. The paper asks whether a contrived training set can make labeled examples useless without the reasoning that led to their selection.
-
2020
Private deep learning with FALCON
With Sameer Wagh, Shruti Tople, Fabrice Benhamouda, Prateek Mittal and Tal Rabin, he coauthors FALCON in 2020. It is an end-to-end three-party protocol for private training and inference of large machine-learning models.
-
Since October 2025
Dean of the Taub Faculty
In October 2025, he takes up the deanship of the Taub Faculty of Computer Science. He is a Professor and Dean, with research interests in cryptography and privacy, machine learning, computational and communication complexity, and randomized distributed protocols.
