Dora Demszky

Also known as Dorottya Demszky

Dora Demszky is an assistant professor of education data science at Stanford University who develops natural language processing methods to help teachers improve instruction. She studied linguistics at Princeton and completed a Stanford linguistics PhD with Dan Jurafsky. Her work included the GoEmotions dataset, AI analysis of history textbooks, and M-Powering Teachers, which gives teachers feedback on how they respond to student ideas. In 2025, she coauthored research on AI support for planning math lessons and TeachLM, a language model adapted for teaching using student-tutor conversations.

Timeline

  1. 2016

    Co-founding the Knapsack Foundation

In 2016, she co-founds Tarisznya Alapítvány, or the Knapsack Foundation, a nonprofit that supports disadvantaged children in Hungary through education.

  2. 2017

    Linguistics at Princeton

She earns a BA in linguistics at Princeton University in 2017, graduating summa cum laude with a minor in computer science.

  3. 2020

    The GoEmotions dataset

In 2020, she coauthors GoEmotions, a dataset of 58,000 English Reddit comments labeled with 27 emotion categories or a neutral label. The work tests a BERT-based model for recognizing emotions in language.

  4. By 2020

    AI analysis of history textbooks

By 2020, she is a co-initiator of a project that uses natural language processing to examine representation in American history textbooks used in Texas. The team finds that Hispanic people receive very little attention and that women are often associated with marriage and family.

  5. 2021

    Measuring responses to student ideas

In 2021, she coauthors “Measuring Conversational Uptake: A Case Study on Student-Teacher Interactions.” The team develops a computational measure of how speakers build on each other's contributions and tests it on three educational datasets.

  6. By 2023

    A Stanford linguistics doctorate

By 2023, she completes a PhD in linguistics at Stanford University, supervised by Dan Jurafsky.

  7. May 2023

    Testing M-Powering Teachers

In May 2023, she publishes a study of M-Powering Teachers as its lead author. The tool analyzes class transcripts and gives teachers feedback on their use of student ideas; a trial in Stanford's online Code in Place course finds that it helps instructors ask more questions and build on students' contributions.

  8. 2025

    AI support for math lessons

In 2025, she is senior author of a study that tests large language models as aids for middle school math lesson planning. The team develops an evaluation framework based on teachers' planning processes and tests AI-generated warmup exercises.

  9. October 2025

    TeachLM for teaching

In October 2025, she coauthors TeachLM with Janos Perczel and Jin Chow. The work adapts language models for teaching using a dataset drawn from 100,000 hours of student-tutor interactions maintained by Polygence.

  10. As of October 2026

    Professor at Stanford

In 2026, she is an assistant professor of education data science at Stanford's Graduate School of Education and an assistant professor of computer science by courtesy. She develops natural language processing methods to support equitable instruction centered on students, including feedback tools for teachers.
