Craig Ramlal

Craig Ramlal is an electrical and computer engineering researcher who connects applied AI with Caribbean policy. He holds BSc, MASc and PhD degrees through a split-site programme at the University of the West Indies and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals; his 2010 undergraduate thesis focused on AI, and his master's thesis on intelligent control. He founded the Intelligent Systems Lab in 2018, co-led deep-learning work on grid asset management in 2019, and partnered with Rutgers researchers on collaborative robots in 2022. In 2023, he joined the UN Secretary-General's High-Level Advisory Body on AI; its recommendations became Objective 5 of the Global Digital Compact in 2024. As of October 2026, he is Executive Director of UWI's Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre and Chair of the Caribbean AI Task Force.

Timeline

  1. 2010

    An AI undergraduate thesis

In 2010, he completes an undergraduate thesis focused on artificial intelligence. His master's thesis focuses on intelligent control systems, and his BSc, MASc and PhD in electrical and computer engineering come from a split-site programme at UWI and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.

  2. 2018

    Founding the Intelligent Systems Lab

In 2018, he founds the Intelligent Systems Lab as an informal, three-person research group in UWI's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

  3. 2019

    Deep learning for grid management

In 2019, he and Arvind Singh co-lead UWI's ARC Labs team with researchers from Tallinn University and Estonia's national power company Elering AS to develop deep-learning object detectors for predictive asset management of the electrical grid.

  4. 2022

A formal lab and collaborative robots

In 2022, UWI recognizes the Intelligent Systems Lab as a departmental research group. He partners with Rutgers University researchers to develop omnidirectional robots that transport objects on a deformable sheet using optimization and reinforcement-learning algorithms.

  5. 2023

    Joining the UN AI body

He joins the UN Secretary-General's 38-member High-Level Multistakeholder Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence in October 2023. He contributes to drafting the CARICOM IMPACS Declaration on Autonomous Weapons Systems in 2023.

  6. September 2024

    A Global Digital Compact objective

Recommendations from the UN body he joins in October 2023 form Objective 5 of the Global Digital Compact, which member states adopt at the 79th UN General Assembly in September 2024.

  7. July 2025

    A Caribbean AI task force

In July 2025, the CTU appoints him Chair of its Caribbean AI Task Force. The University of the West Indies formally upgrades the Intelligent Systems Lab.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading UWI's AI Innovation Centre

As of October 2026, he is Executive Director of UWI's Artificial Intelligence Innovation Centre and Chair of the CTU Caribbean Taskforce on AI.
