Christian Depeursinge

Also known as Christian D. Depeursinge

Christian Depeursinge is an optical imaging researcher whose computational methods reconstruct quantitative images from holograms for biomedical analysis. His work applies digital holographic microscopy to living cells, neuronal activity, label-free cytotoxicity screening, and phase nanoscopy. He coauthored a 2018 review of quantitative phase imaging in biomedicine and was named as an inventor on a 2019 portable holographic device patent. As of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus at EPFL, leads its Microvision and Micro-Diagnostics group, and is a co-founder of Lyncée Tec.

Timeline

  1. 1999

    Amplitude and phase reconstruction

In 1999, he coauthors a digital microscopy method that uses numerical reconstruction of Fresnel off-axis holograms to produce simultaneous amplitude and quantitative phase contrast.

  2. 2005

    DHM for living cells

In 2005, he coauthors a study on digital holographic microscopy for quantitative imaging of living cells with subwavelength axial accuracy.

  3. 2011

    Holography for neural activity

In 2011, he and Pierre Magistretti apply digital holographic microscopy to neurobiology, where researchers use it to observe neuronal activity in real time and in three dimensions.

  4. 2013

    Label-free cytotoxicity screening

In 2013, he coauthors a study that introduces digital holographic microscopy as a label-free screening method for cytotoxicity in living mammalian cells.

  5. 2013

    Marker-free phase nanoscopy

In 2013, he coauthors a method for imaging unstained living biological specimens beyond the optical diffraction limit. The team reports 90-nanometer lateral resolution using holographic detection and complex deconvolution.

  6. 2018

    Quantitative phase imaging

In 2018, he coauthors a review of quantitative phase imaging in biomedicine, which surveys the method's principles and biomedical applications.

  7. 2019

    A portable holographic device

In 2019, he is named as an inventor on a patent for a portable camera that attaches to standard transmission or reflection microscopes for complex wavefront analysis.

  8. As of October 2026

    EPFL emeritus and lab leader

As of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus at EPFL and leads the Microvision and Micro-Diagnostics group at its Advanced Photonics Laboratory. He is a co-founder of Lyncée Tec and teaches at EPFL.
