Burcu Karagol Ayan
Also known as Burcu Karagol-Ayan
Burcu Karagol Ayan is a Google Research software engineer working on natural language understanding, multimodal datasets and responsible AI. She earned a PhD at the University of Maryland in 2007 and coauthored research on low-data text classification in 2019 and quotation recommendation in 2021. In 2022, she coauthored the Imagen paper, which won a NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award. In 2024, she coauthored work on detailed image descriptions and text-to-image safety. Her 2025 paper modeled species distribution with graph neural networks, and her 2026 paper studied geographic priors for bioacoustic monitoring.

Timeline
-
2007
A Maryland PhD
In 2007, she completes a University of Maryland PhD. Her dissertation work with Amy Weinberg explores lexical acquisition from bilingual dictionaries.
-
2019
Text classification with few examples
In 2019, she coauthors Text Classification with Few Examples using Controlled Generalization, which uses sparse semantic features to help classifiers work with limited training data.
-
2021
Context-based quote recommendation
In 2021, she coauthors Context-Based Quotation Recommendation. The system ranks quotable passages from text an author has written and adapts BERT methods from open-domain question answering.
-
2022
An Outstanding Paper Award
She coauthors Photorealistic Text-to-Image Diffusion Models with Deep Language Understanding, which introduces Imagen, a text-to-image diffusion model using large language models. The paper receives a NeurIPS 2022 Outstanding Paper Award.
-
2024
Image descriptions and model safety
In 2024, she coauthors ImageInWords, a human-in-the-loop framework and dataset for detailed image descriptions. She also coauthors Harm Amplification in Text-to-Image Models, which defines and measures harmful representations produced from seemingly safe prompts.
-
2025
Graph neural networks for species modeling
In 2025, she coauthors Heterogeneous graph neural networks for species distribution modeling. The model treats species and locations as separate node sets and predicts detection records as links between them.
-
2026
Calibrating bioacoustic models
In 2026, she coauthors Beyond Discrimination: Calibrated Geoprior Fusion for Bioacoustic Monitoring. The paper combines acoustic predictions with geographic priors to improve calibration for biodiversity monitoring.
-
As of October 2026
