Researcher

Bruce Fischl

Bruce Fischl is a neuroscientist whose algorithms help computers map brain anatomy from MRI. After working as a software developer in industry and earning a PhD in Cognitive and Neural Systems, he joined the Martinos Center in 1997. He helped launch FreeSurfer in 1999 and developed surface-modeling methods for the cerebral cortex. He formed CorticoMetrics in 2012 to bring FreeSurfer into clinical practice and coauthored FastSurfer, a deep-learning pipeline for structural MRI, in 2019. As of October 2026, he is Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and coauthors an AI tool for brain-tissue segmentation.

Timeline

  1. 1997

    Joining the Martinos Center

He joins the Martinos Center in January 1997 after working as a software developer in industry and earning a PhD in Cognitive and Neural Systems.

  2. 1999

    FreeSurfer's first release

In 1999, FreeSurfer launches with two NeuroImage papers and an official launch at the Human Brain Mapping meeting. He coauthors a companion paper with Martin Sereno and Anders Dale on cortical inflation, flattening and a surface-based coordinate system.

  3. 2001

    Automated manifold surgery

In 2001, he publishes "Automated Manifold Surgery" with Arthur Liu and Anders Dale; the method constructs geometrically accurate, topologically correct models of the human cerebral cortex.

  4. 2012

    Co-founding CorticoMetrics

In 2012, he forms CorticoMetrics with Laboratory for Computational Neuroimaging engineer Nick Schmansky to bring FreeSurfer technologies into clinical practice.

  5. 2019

    The FastSurfer preprint

He coauthors the 2019 FastSurfer preprint, a deep-learning pipeline that automates structural brain MRI processing and reproduces FreeSurfer's segmentation, surface reconstruction and cortical parcellation.

  6. As of October 2026

    Professor of Radiology

As of October 2026, he is Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and directs the Laboratory for Computational Neuroimaging at the Martinos Center. In 2026, he coauthors a paper titled "A public generalizable AI tool for automated segmentation of coronal brain tissue slabs for 3D neuropathology."
