Researcher

Anshul Thakur

Anshul Thakur is an AI researcher whose work spans audio machine learning and clinical AI. He coauthored three Interspeech papers in 2018, completed a PhD at IIT Mandi in 2020, and later studied privacy-preserving health data, clinical model transfer, and dataset condensation. As of October 2026, he is a Departmental Lecturer in Clinical Machine Learning at Oxford and is due to join ELLIS Institute Finland as a principal investigator with a co-affiliation at the University of Oulu. His current research focuses on clinical AI, healthcare data democratization, reliable foundation models, and clinical federated learning.

Timeline

  1. 2018

    Three Interspeech audio papers

In 2018, he coauthors three Interspeech papers: an all-convolutional network for bird activity detection, deep convex representations for bioacoustics classification, and ASe, a deep-learning framework for acoustic-scene embedding.

  2. 2020

    A PhD at IIT Mandi

He completes a PhD at IIT Mandi's School of Computing and Electrical Engineering in 2020. His doctoral research uses dynamic kernels, tensor factorization, and deep learning to analyze audio patterns.

  3. 2024

    Encoding clinical data

In 2024, he coauthors a Nature Communications paper that explores irreversible data encoding to share healthcare data while reducing information leakage from trained models.

  4. 2025

    Transfer across clinical tasks

In 2025, he coauthors Adaptive Parameter Optimisation, a framework for optimizing shared models across clinical tasks and managing task-specific parameters to reduce interference.

  5. 2026

    Condensing clinical datasets

In 2026, he coauthors a paper on clinical dataset condensation for classical models, using a differentially private method that preserves model utility.

  6. September 2026

A PI role at ELLIS Finland

In September 2026, ELLIS Institute Finland lists him among its incoming principal investigators for the 2026–2027 academic year. He will be co-affiliated with the University of Oulu.

  7. As of October 2026

    Clinical machine learning at Oxford

As of October 2026, he is a departmental lecturer in clinical machine learning at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on clinical AI through a theoretical and translational lens, spanning healthcare data democratization, reliable foundation models, and clinical federated learning.
