Researcher

Andrew Markham

Andrew Markham is a professor of computer science at Oxford whose work applies machine learning to sensing and robotics. Raised in Zimbabwe, he earned electrical engineering degrees at the University of Cape Town and researched a wildlife-tracking system with a neural network on a microcontroller during his PhD. At Oxford, his sensor work tracked badgers underground, and he coauthored RandLA-Net for large point-cloud segmentation. In 2025, he coauthored a study that used machine learning to identify leopards by their roars. He is the Computer Science lead for Intelligent Earth and directs Oxford's MSc in Software Engineering.

Timeline

  1. 2004–2008

    Electrical engineering at Cape Town

Raised in Zimbabwe, he earns a first-class honours BSc in Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town in 2004 and a PhD in the same field there in 2008. His doctoral research develops a wildlife-tracking system using heterogeneous wireless sensor networks and a neural network on a microcontroller in real time.

  2. 2008–2010

    Oxford postdoc and WildSensing

He joins Oxford in 2008 as a postdoctoral fellow and becomes an EPSRC Interdisciplinary Early Career Fellow in 2010. His WildSensing work in Niki Trigoni's Sensor Network group earns him the best-presentation prize at ACM SenSys in 2010 for an underground badger-tracking system.

  3. 2013–2021

    Full professor at Oxford

He becomes a faculty member in 2013 and reaches full professor in 2021.

  4. 2019–2020

    RandLA-Net for point clouds

He coauthors the 2019 RandLA-Net preprint, which appears at CVPR in 2020. The lightweight network uses random point sampling and local feature aggregation to segment large 3D point clouds.

  5. 2025

    Machine learning identifies leopards

In 2025, he coauthors a study that uses machine learning to identify individual leopards from roar patterns, with 93.1% overall accuracy.

  6. As of October 2026

    Professor and programme lead

He is Professor of Computer Science at Oxford and leads a large group in its Cyber Physical Systems theme. He is the Computer Science lead for Intelligent Earth and directs the MSc in Software Engineering in the Professional Master's Programme.
