Researcher

Ana Namburete

Ana Namburete is an Oxford computer scientist who uses machine learning and ultrasound for fetal brain research and neonatal neuroimaging. A Commonwealth Scholarship brought her to Oxford for a DPhil after studies in Eswatini and Canada. She built an independent research group and led work that produced a machine-learning atlas of fetal brain maturation in 2023. She is an Associate Professor and Co-Director of Oxford’s AI for Fetal Brain Imaging programme, and she leads the OMNI Lab.

Timeline

  1. By 2016

    An Oxford DPhil

Originally from Mozambique, she takes the International Baccalaureate at the United World College of Southern Africa in Eswatini and earns a BASc in Engineering Science from Simon Fraser University. A Commonwealth Scholarship brings her to Oxford for a DPhil in Engineering Science under Alison Noble, which she completes by 2016.

  2. 2016–2022

    A Royal Academy fellowship

After her DPhil, she holds a postdoctoral position funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. From 2016 to 2022, she holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship and establishes an independent research group in Oxford’s Department of Engineering Science.

  3. 2020–2021

    Leading the MIUA conference

She serves as Program Chair of the Medical Image Understanding and Analysis conference in 2020 and 2021. At MIUA 2020, she serves on its organizing committee as a Royal Academy Research Fellow at Oxford’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering.

  4. 2021

    Building an Oxford lab

In 2021, she joins Oxford’s Department of Computer Science and Pembroke College as a Rokos Tutorial Fellow. She founds the NeuroImage Analysis Group at Oxford, which develops computational algorithms to improve ultrasound’s diagnostic value.

  5. 2023

    A fetal brain atlas

In 2023, she leads and first authors the Nature study that creates the first digital atlas of fetal brain maturation from more than 2,500 serial 3D ultrasound scans. Her AI and image-processing tools generate an average depiction of the fetal brain for each week from 14 weeks of pregnancy.

  6. 2025

    An ERC Starting Grant

In September 2025, she wins an ERC Starting Grant for WOMB2COT.

  7. As of October 2026

    AI for neonatal ultrasound

She is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Oxford, a Rokos Tutorial Fellow at Pembroke College, and Co-Director of the Oxford Martin Programme on AI for Fetal Brain Imaging. Her WOMB2COT project in the OMNI Lab targets 3D reconstruction and multi-view data fusion for neonatal cranial ultrasound, with validation on neonatal intensive-care scans.
