Adam Berger
Adam Berger is a computer scientist whose work spans statistical machine translation, maximum-entropy natural language processing, information retrieval and healthcare AI. In IBM's Candide group, he worked on statistical machine translation in the early 1990s; he coauthored 1994 and 1996 NLP papers and 1997 text-segmentation work, and his 1996 paper won the ACL's 2021 Test-of-Time Paper Award. His 2001 Carnegie Mellon PhD in computer science focused on information retrieval; he also founded Eizel and Penthera, two venture-backed startups where he served as CTO, and Nokia acquired Eizel in 2003. In 2016, he became UPMC's executive vice president and chief technology officer; in 2020, he joined Amazon to run its technology organization for Amazon Care. At WindRose Health Investors, he became an operating partner in 2024; the firm named him to lead its Gradient AI team in April 2026, and he leads the team as of October 2026.
Timeline
-
1990s
IBM's Candide group
In the early 1990s, he works in IBM's Candide group, whose mission is to explore fully automatic translation from one language to another. In 1994, he coauthors “The Candide System for Machine Translation.” In 1996, he coauthors “A Maximum Entropy Approach to Natural Language Processing” with Stephen A. Della Pietra and Vincent J. Della Pietra.
-
1997
Text segmentation with exponential models
In 1997, he coauthors “Text Segmentation Using Exponential Models” with Doug Beeferman and John Lafferty. The paper uses short- and long-range language models to identify topic changes in text.
-
2001
A Carnegie Mellon PhD
In 2001, he earns a PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon, with John Lafferty as his advisor. His thesis, “Statistical Machine Learning for Information Retrieval,” introduces and tests a statistical machine-learning framework for information-retrieval problems.
-
2003
Nokia acquires Eizel
Earlier in his career, he founds two venture-backed startups, Eizel and Penthera, and serves as CTO at both. Nokia buys Eizel in 2003, and he leads an innovation group at Nokia.
-
2016
CTO at UPMC
In 2016, he joins UPMC as executive vice president and chief technology officer. He leads a team of about 250 technologists developing new solutions at the intersection of machine learning and healthcare.
-
2020
Technology at Amazon Care
In 2020, he joins Amazon to run the technology organization for Amazon Care.
-
2021
ACL Test-of-Time award
In 2021, the ACL names him a co-recipient of its Test-of-Time Paper Award for “A Maximum Entropy Approach to Natural Language Processing.”

Since 2024
Leading WindRose Gradient AI
In 2024, he joins WindRose Health Investors as an operating partner. In April 2026, WindRose names him to lead Gradient AI, an in-house team that helps portfolio companies identify, prioritize and implement technology and AI projects. As of October 2026, he is an operating partner at WindRose and leads Gradient AI.
