NSF committed $5.48 billion to awards linked to AI researchers
Data as of
- NSF obligations
- $5.48 billion
- Distinct awards
- 8,930
- Researchers matched
- 1,299
How much US public research money supported the people who build AI? We link 8,930 National Science Foundation award IDs to 1,299 researchers and estimate $5.48 billion in funds obligated to their projects. Carnegie Mellon University leads the matched institutions at $445.5M, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology at $295.9M.
These are full project amounts committed to institutions, with PI, co-PI and former investigator roles included. The totals cover matched researchers' work across fields and years. They measure one part of public research support; the collection covers people profiled here and does not measure all federal AI spending. Every dollar figure is nominal and unadjusted for inflation.
Key findings
- Computer and Information Science and Engineering accounts for 69% of matched awards; the computing directorate accounts for 60% of matched dollars.
- The median lead-PI award was $162k for starts in 1990–94 and $450k in 2020–24. These are nominal obligations recorded as of 24 October 2026.
- We link 436 award IDs whose titles start with CAREER to 365 investigators. Transfers can give one project more than one award ID.
- The 46 awards of at least $10M account for 19% of matched dollars.
Where the awards came from
Computer and Information Science and Engineering has 6,194 awards out of 8,930. The table also gives nominal dollars by directorate.

| Geosciences | 123 | 1% | $133,615,141 |
The computing directorate appears as CSE in these award records; NSF calls it Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). We retain NSF's directorate assignment for each award. A researcher's grant history can also include mathematics, physics, biology and education.
Award size across complete periods
Lead-PI award medians are $162,302 for 1990–94 and $449,735.5 for 2020–24. All-award medians are $167,422 and $495,033. Values are unadjusted for inflation.

| 2020–2024 | 532 | $449,735.5 | 765 | $495,033 |
The lead-PI series uses 565 awards in 1990–94 and 532 in 2020–24. The wider set includes awards linked through co-PIs and former investigators: its median was $167k and $495k in the same periods. We group total obligations by start year; each value can cover several years of work. Differences can reflect inflation, project mix and award duration. Recent awards can still receive additional funds.
Where the awards were held

We group the dollars by the awardee name reported by NSF. The matched awards cover part of each institution's research. A co-investigator's match assigns the full award to its awardee institution. Funds shared across a project are not divided among people or partner institutions.
Large awards account for a substantial share: 46 award IDs of at least $10M total $1.02 billion, or 19% of matched obligations. The largest award is A Center for Brains, Minds and Machines: the Science and the Technology of Intelligence ($48.1M).
Research funding before company and lab founding
CAREER titles identify 436 distinct award IDs linked to 365 people. We include titles that begin with CAREER followed by a colon or dash, ignoring case. This counts award records and associated investigators. NSF can issue a new award number when a grant moves to another institution.
For 115 people with a dated company or lab founding in our career records, the first matched lead-PI award started in an earlier calendar year. The examples below show that sequence. The table shows the recorded sequence. Assessing a grant's role in a later company would need separate evidence.
| Researcher | First matched PI award | Later founding | Calendar-year gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moritz Hardt | 2018: CAREER: Stable Foundations for Reliable Machine Learning | 2026: Grubel | 8 |
| Jared Kaplan | 2013: Field Theory and Gravity from the Bottom-Up | 2021: Anthropic | 8 |
| Ali Farhadi | 2013: CAREER: Computation and Approximation in Structured Learning | 2017: Xnor.ai | 4 |
| Daphne Koller | 2000: ITR: Relational Probabilistic Models for Biological Data | 2012: Coursera | 12 |
The match uses researcher names, institutions, career dates and NSF investigator identifiers or email evidence. We use accepted matches in the collection; ambiguous matches are excluded. A person can appear on an award in more than one role. We combine all person and role rows with the same award ID before summing dollars. The award-ID count can include transfers of the same project. The source snapshot is dated 24 October 2026.
