Yuyang Zhou

Also known as 周雨扬

Yuyang Zhou is a deep learning research engineer at DeepSeek in Beijing and an author of the DeepSeek-V3, DeepSeek-R1 and DeepSeek-V4 reports. They won gold at the 32nd International Olympiad in Informatics in 2020 while at Shaoxing No.1 High School, then studied in the Turing Class at Peking University and placed second at the 45th ICPC World Finals in 2022. They earned a bachelor's degree in July 2024 and coauthored MoConVQ, a physics-based motion control framework published at SIGGRAPH 2024. In August 2024, Zhou joined DeepSeek, and the DeepSeek-V3 report followed in December 2024, the DeepSeek-R1 paper in Nature in September 2025 and the DeepSeek-V4 report in April 2026.

Timeline

  1. 2020

    Gold at IOI 2020

In 2020, as a student at Shaoxing No.1 High School, they win gold at the 32nd International Olympiad in Informatics, tying for third place on the gold-medal list with 592.62 points.

  2. 2020–2024

    Turing Class at Peking University

They study computer science in the Turing Class at the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Peking University in Beijing from 2020, and earn a bachelor's degree in July 2024.

  3. November 2022

Second at the ICPC World Finals

In November 2022, with teammates Zhaozhe Kong and Junyue Pan, they place second in the world and first in Asia at the 45th ICPC World Finals in Dhaka, Bangladesh, winning gold for Peking University. The team, coached by Guojie Luo and Qinjian Zhang, solves 10 problems; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in first place, solves 11.

  4. 2023–2024

    MoConVQ motion control

In October 2023, they coauthor MoConVQ with Heyuan Yao, Zhenhua Song, Tenglong Ao, Baoquan Chen and Libin Liu. The framework for physics-based motion control builds on vector quantized variational autoencoders and model-based reinforcement learning, and the paper appears in SIGGRAPH 2024 Conference Papers.

  5. August 2024

    Joining DeepSeek in Beijing

In August 2024, they start work at DeepSeek in Beijing as a deep learning research engineer. Their research interests include large language models, competitive coding and software engineering.

  6. December 2024

    DeepSeek-V3 technical report

They are among the authors of the DeepSeek-V3 Technical Report, posted in December 2024. DeepSeek-V3 is a Mixture-of-Experts language model with 671B total parameters, 37B of them activated for each token, pre-trained on 14.8 trillion tokens.

  7. 2025

    DeepSeek-R1 reasoning model

They are among the authors of DeepSeek-R1, posted in January 2025, which shows that the reasoning abilities of large language models can be incentivized through pure reinforcement learning. The paper appears in Nature in September 2025.

  8. April 2026

    A DeepSeek-V4 preview

They are among the authors of the DeepSeek-V4 preview report, submitted in April 2026. It presents DeepSeek-V4-Pro with 1.6T parameters and DeepSeek-V4-Flash with 284B parameters, both supporting a context of one million tokens. They continue as a deep learning research engineer at DeepSeek.
